'Doctor Who' Jenna-Louise Coleman 'not filling Karen Gillan's shoes'

By
Doctor Who's Jenna-Louise Coleman has said she doesn't see herself as a replacement for Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill.

Coleman will be appearing as The Doctor's next companion in Doctor Who's festive special 'The Snowmen', which is set after the departures of Amy and Rory.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress was quizzed on if she is nervous to be following on from two long-running Doctor Who companions.

"I watched the five episodes that went out recently as we were filming. It was strange to watch their goodbye as I was doing the beginning - and interesting to see where it left the Doctor as well," Coleman explained.

The star went on to say: "There's no way to consider it other than something totally different. You fill somebody else's shoes by trying to do the same thing - and I don't think that's a healthy way to look at it.

"It's a whole new story, it's a whole new character. It changes the Doctor and you've got to go on that journey and also go on your own journey with it, as well."

Coleman also revealed that Gillan reached out to her with a comforting word after she landed the Doctor Who role.

"[Karen] sent me a message. She texted me," Coleman recalled. "I was pacing around, trying to figure out a scene and I checked my phone and I just had a message from her saying kind of 'Good luck' and 'You're going to knock it out the park'.

"Then she told me to eat at Woods restaurant in Cardiff [where Doctor Who is filmed]. That was her Cardiff tip."

Coleman will appear with Matt Smith and Richard E Grant in Doctor Who's special 'The Snowmen', which will air at Christmas on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US.
