Published Tuesday, Apr 3 2007, 15:24 BST | By Joanne Oatts
Current Doctor Who David Tennant is to star in Learners, a BBC Films production written by Jessica Hynes.
Spaced actress and co-star Hynes, nee Stevenson, will also star in the drama for BBC One, as downtrodden wife Bev, a woman desperate to pass her driving test despite failing it eight times.
Tennant will play Bev's patient driving instructor Chris, a devout Christian who Bev develops a crush on. The plot thickens as Chris has feelings for his boss Fiona, played by Confetti actress Sarah Hadland, who is having an affair with a married man Gerry, who works with Bev.
Hynes said: "It took me ten years to pass my test – this year I finally did it so I could do the film! I had a great instructor, he taught me to take my time and relax, when I passed I cried with joy!"
Producer Ruth Caleb, director Francesca Joseph, Jessica Hynes, Shaun Dingwall and executive producer David Thompson are reunited on Learners following their collaboration on 2003's BBC Two drama Tomorrow La Scala which scooped the award for best drama at the Indie Awards that year.
Learners begins filming in April 2007 on location in Hertfordshire and will transmit later this year.
