Hurt has told Eastern Daily Press that he plays "part of the Doctor" in a "kind of trinity".

The 50th anniversary special will reportedly not feature any stars from the 'classic series'.

Former Time Lord actors Sylvester McCoy, Colin Baker and Paul McGann have all expressed an interest in returning but insisted that they have heard nothing.

Christopher Eccleston - who appeared as the Ninth Doctor in 2005 - was approached to feature in the special, but ultimately declined to take part.

Doctor Who continues this Saturday on BBC One and BBC America with the Neil Gaiman-penned Cybermen episode 'Nightmare in Silver'.
