'Doctor Who' lead should be female, says 'Mr Selfridge's Katherine Kelly

When asked by Radio Times if she would like to play the next Time Lord, she said: "Will they ever let us have a female Doctor Who? I don't know. I think they should."

She added: "Well, you're saying it, not me. You've got the power. You could just do a front cover with me as Doctor Who - and then it would have to happen, wouldn't it?"

Torchwood's John Barrowman and Dame Helen Mirren have both called for a female Doctor, although Mirren later stated that she is not in the running for the part.

Katherine Kelly will return to Mr Selfridge for its second series, which will air on ITV in 2014 to coincide with the centenary of the First World War.
