Bill Nighy on 'Doctor Who' Peter Capaldi: "He's a terrific choice"

By and Simon Reynolds
Bill Nighy has said that Peter Capaldi is a "terrific choice" to replace Matt Smith on Doctor Who.

Nighy and his About Time director Richard Curtis both gave Digital Spy their thoughts on Capaldi's casting as the 12th Doctor.

Nighy claimed that the Thick of It star will bring "elegance and wit" to the role of the Doctor.

Meanwhile, Curtis joked that Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat had essentially "cast himself" when he picked Capaldi.

"They're both 50-year-old, slightly grumpy Scots," quipped the writer and filmmaker.

Nighy also revealed to DS whether he has ever seriously been considered for Doctor Who's lead role, while Curtis reveals whether he would consider writing a follow-up to his acclaimed 2010 episode 'Vincent and the Doctor'.

About Time is showing in UK cinemas now and will be released in the US on November 1.
