The 30-year-old actor shocked fans by shaving his head to star in Ryan Gosling's directorial debut How to Catch a Monster.

It was later reported that the star would need to have a wig fitted for the festive episode, which will be Smith's last as the 11th Doctor. The Thick of It star Peter Capaldi will make his first appearance in the sci-fi Christmas special as Smith's successor, the 12th Time Lord.

And yesterday Smith's fake hair, similar to his former floppy locks, was looking a little unkempt as he shot his final scenes on location at Lydstep Park in Gabalfa.

The star also stopped to greet fans and sign autographs after filming.

Doctor Who's head writer and executive producer Stephen Moffat recently revealed that Smith is "heartbreakingly good" in his final episode.

At the recent GQ Men of the Year Awards, Smith lamented about his current hairpiece: "I [cut my hair] for a film, but it means I have to wear a wig in Doctor Who, which is a nightmare.

"I'm excited - I start shooting the Christmas special [on] Sunday. It'll be sad - the end of a wonderful era!"

Doctor Who will return to BBC One for its 50th anniversary special on Saturday, November 23.
