O'Mara - who played Who villainess The Rani - told Digital Spy that she approves of the Thick of It star's casting as the Twelfth Doctor.

"He's a very good actor," said the actress, who was promoting her upcoming event An Evening with Kate O'Mara, where she will look back on her career.

"He's sort of quirky, he's off the wall, he's different. I think people will relate to that and want to see what happens.

"I think he's ideal casting - sort of in the Jon Pertwee mold. It'd be just so lovely if I could get back into that [show] and do some scenes with him - it really would be fantastic."

O'Mara previously appeared in two 1980s Doctor Who adventures opposite Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy, describing the two actors as "both quirky but both quite different".

"Sylvester of course is as mad as a hatter but he's wonderful," she said. "Colin is far more straightforward.

"But you know, wonderful, wonderful scripts we had in those days, and I enjoyed my time on Doctor Who with him as well. It was lovely."

An Evening with Kate O'Mara takes place on Saturday, October 19 at 7pm at The Misty Moon Gallery, Ladywell Tavern, 80 Ladywell Road, SE13 7HS.

Kate will also attend the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary celebration at London's Excel in November.
