'Doctor Who' Moffat on Capaldi: "It's time for the old beast to snarl"

By
Doctor Who's Steven Moffat has described Peter Capaldi's take on the Time Lord as an "old beast".

The Thick of It star will "give us a whole new kind of Doctor", the sci-fi showrunner told Flicks and the City.

"We've got used to two brilliant iterations of the younger, more popular Doctor and they have both been superlative," Moffat said. "But now it's time for the old beast to snarl at you for a bit!

"Sometimes you see that a bit in Matt Smith's Doctor - he will remind the people around him, 'I'm not really like this' - but I think Peter's Doctor will make that even clearer."

Doctor Who's head writer previously suggested that 55-year-old Capaldi's portrayal of the Doctor is "not at all elderly in style".

"People keep talking about this 'elderly' Doctor that we've cast… he leaps around the place probably more than any other Doctor in that first scene," Moffat revealed.

Capaldi - who made a cameo in Doctor Who's 50th anniversary special - will make his official debut as the new Doctor in December 25's Christmas special 'The Time of the Doctor'.
