Doctor Who series 8: Sherlock's Steve Thompson writing new episode

Steve Thompson has been confirmed as one of the writers on Doctor Who series eight.

The Sherlock scribe's third episode for the BBC sci-fi drama - his first to star Peter Capaldi as the Doctor - will air in late 2014.

Thompson will write series eight's fifth instalment, with Douglas Mackinnon (Doctor Who, Line of Duty) directing, reports Doctor Who Magazine.

2011's 'The Curse of the Black Spot' and 2013's 'Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS' were Thompson's two previous contributions to the show.

He has also written three episodes of Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss's Sherlock - 2010's 'The Blind Banker', 2012's 'The Reichenbach Fall' and 2014's 'The Sign of Three'.

Moffat is now confirmed as writing the first and fourth episodes of Doctor Who's next series - debuting in late 2014 on BBC One - with Phil Ford scripting episode two and the writer of episode three as yet unconfirmed.
