Clarke, who plays Mickey Smith in the time-travelling drama series, insisted that Who and its edgier spin-off show, Torchwood, offer the same accessible, family-oriented viewing as its US rivals.
"You know, we sit down and watch shows like Buffy and Lost and Alias - they keep us glued to our TVs every week," he told DS.
"I think Doctor Who and Torchwood are the nearest things we have to that sort of family TV that everyone can watch together, even though Torchwood is that little bit edgier."
Russell T Davies, the executive producer of Doctor Who and Torchwood, has previously admitted that Torchwood was inspired by Buffy.
