The Doctor and Rose arrive in an underground museum in Utah, America in 2012. A cyberman helmet on display alerts the time traveller to the fact that someone is collecting alien exhibits, but seconds later the pair are surrounded by soldiers and taken captive.
They discover that the complex is owned by Henry Van Statten, the powerful and wealthy head of the Geocomtex company. He has one live alien in his possession, but despite repeated torture the "metaltron" - as he's dubbed it - refuses to talk. Rose meets Adam - a young expert in alien technology that's been recovered on Earth.
Van Statten is curious about The Doctor's origins and locks him in the cell with the captive alien, hidden in the shadows. When the Timelord offers his help a rasping voice is heard from the darkness and The Doctor's face is overwhelmed by fear when the lights come on and he is confronted by his mortal enemy - a Dalek.
However, his nemesis is unable to exterminate him and appears powerless and decrepit. The Doctor enjoys seeing his enemy in such a state and mocks the Dalek. As he tries to end its existence, The Doctor is removed from the cell and interrogated. Van Statten is furious that the Dalek then refuses to answer to him and orders more torture.
Rose, unaware of what's happened to her travelling companion, hears the Dalek's screams of agony and feels pity for the creature. When she touches it, the Dalek absorbs her DNA - crucially that of a time traveller - and reenergises itself. Exterminating those in its way, the Dalek roams the base and demonstrates its ability to fly.
The Dalek soon appears to be confused due to a lack of orders. As the killing spree continues, Rose finds herself unable to escape with Adam and The Doctor hears her screams as the Dalek screams 'exterminate'...
