Preview-ish: The 'Doctor Who' Finale

Published Tuesday, Jul 1 2008, 15:48 BST | By Neil Wilkes | 38 comments
This week on Doctor Who, erm... well... you see... I don't know what happens.

Yes, for the first time I've not been allowed a glimpse of the final episode. Can you believe it?!

Truth be told, I would feel more offended but this blackout is absolute. No-one in the media has been able to see the frighteningly-titled 'Journey's End', meaning we'll all be watching the season climax for the first time together this Saturday.

I can, however, share these rather curious pictures of scenes from the finale:

As we can see, Sarah Jane doesn't die (but then, she was never going to, seeing as she has her own spinoff show and all). Plus, Jackie and Mickey return! There's no sign of Pete Tyler.

Next up, courtesy of those lovely people from Blue Peter, a 30-second clip of the finale. Hit 'play' below to watch:

As it was so popular last week, time now for some of your Doctor Who-themed questions.

Hi Neil,

I have a question regarding Doctor Who. He is a Time Lord and can travel in time, so if something bad is happening can he not go back in time to before the bad thing started and stop it happening?

Sam Rao

Neil: Yes he could go back in time and do just that, but as we learned in the Pompeii episode this season, meddling with certain major events in history could have untold consequences. Such is the burden of a Time Lord.

Can you tell me why Doctor Who is not shown in HD when its spinoff series Torchwood is?

Sameer Rao

Neil: Because Russell T Davies has flatly refused to, arguing that it costs more money (and he would rather spend his budget on special effects) as well as more time (which is already at a premium). Maybe when Steve Moffat takes over this will become a possibility.

Is Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) going to die in the finale of Doctor Who? plz plz tell me.

doctorwhofan

Neil: When I spoke to her earlier this year about the finale, she said that the door had been "left open" for her character to return. Read into that what you will.

Just a quickie about the Doctor Who finale episodes. Will Rose and Gwen meet and will the Gweneth (The Unquiet Dead) / Gwen resemblance be addressed seeing as Gweneth was the first person to ever mention The Darkness and Bad Wolf. Or should we accept these are two completely different characters. Any chance of Eve Myles returning as companion for one of the 2009 specials?

Chris Theed

Neil: It would be neat if they woved in a reference to the dearly departed Gwyneth, but I doubt it will be addressed. I doubt even more so that Ms Myles will be joining The Doctor in his big blue box any time soon.

how do fella..
Do we have a start date for The Sarah Jane Adventures? And can you confirm mickey and martha are the Torchwood replacements for series 3 ? Take it easy.

Lee Wilkinson

Neil: Sarah Jane season two is currently being filmed for an expected late September premiere on BBC One. I can't confirm anything about the new Torchwood additions, but personally, I'm hoping for newbies. Or a resurrected Tosh. Or even just the corpse of Tosh, I don't mind.

Hi. i would like to know, will Rose stay on planet earth with the Doctor or return to her universe after the finale?? Thank you!

Tibbbzzzzz

Neil: What if she does neither?

Just finish watching Doctor Who 'The Stolen Earth'. Please tell me who the new doctor is. (P.S if its James Nesbitt I don't think I can watch Doctor Who even though i love it).

Zahra

Neil: Probably the question everyone has been asking themselves this week. Let's just wait until Saturday, though, eh?

Finally, a look at the trailer for the finale. Yes yes, Davros, we get that you're evil.

There is a reference to Gweneth/Gwen in the episode.

One of the people commented on the fact that being a timelord would mean that he could travel back and stop bad things happening again. In the original series there was much made of this and the fact is the TARDIS doesn't allow you to go somewhere where it or you are. Sorry I can't more exact but it was about 15 years ago when I last watched DW. Hope this helps!

If we have 2 doctors then 1 can go with Rose back to her world and live happily ever after as Hubby and Wife......I'm a girl I like Romance leave me alone !

It makes sense that Davros wants to destroy everything, even himself - after all, in his first appearance, Genesis of the Daleks, he revealed that he would be willing to release a virus which would kill every other living thing, just so he could have been succesful. And if the daleks and Davros destroy everything else, and themselves, then Davros has ultimately won, and nobody can ever beat him. Strange thing though, because the universe can't end now, we already know it ends in the year 300 trillion, where the spheres came from in series 3. As for the doctor, I reckon he could regenerate, but because he is one second outside of real time, he could return to being David Tennant when the Earth returns to the real space-time continuum. It was rumoured John Simm has been photographed on set, leading to specualtion that he would become the next incarnation of the doctor, and the general response was that it would be awesome but impossible, yet maybe he has a cameo appearance; well wouldn't one episode as the doctor be pretty much a cameo role? That added to the possibility that the hand could become a new doctor, Jenny could return and/or there could be a doctor from Rose's universe. Any sign of Pete Tyler or Jake?

Howdy, is The Doctor's hand which has been milling around the tardis for the last two years going to have any use in the final episode or is it a sheer co-winky dink?? And Capt. Jack to save the day

the assistant who dies.. well, its mickey isnt it? he turns up and goes out as mickey the hero.. no-one has mentioned him.. and well done on noel clarke.. adulthood and DW.. great public profile!

Mansh what a great theory about Rose becoming the TARDIS! Wouldn't it be great if the Doctor could have conversations with her floating head on a TV screen (Red Dwarf style)!!!! Seriously though, I'd be amazed if we see the 11th Doctor in this episode. But for people automatically ruling it out because of the XMas special it's quite possible DT was filming some sort of "flashback" scene, so you shouldn't assume that he is filming as the current Doctor... On that subject, River Song said the Doctor was the youngest she'd ever seen him and that his eyes were still the same (or something like that), I took that to mean she met him as an older version from a future regeneration. Also you can't forget the ominous warning from the Ood that the Doctors song will soon come to an end... Whatever happens I hope when the 5th series starts they "unlock" the Time War and allow the Doctor back on Gallifrey - you could get a whole series out of that story arc! The hand will definitely play a part somehow (though the idea of it growing back into the Doctor is a little OTT, I hope RTD has a better use for it than that). It would also be plausible for the TARDIS to be destroyed/badly damaged - Moffat may want to redesign the interior set when he takes over. One things for sure, it's been a long time since I've looked forward to a TV show this much! I still have the image of DT saying to Rose "I'm sorry it's too late, I'm Regenerating!" - it was probably the best cliffhanger ever, and DT deliveried his (last?) line just right! The finale has more potential plot devices than you can shake a stick at - Davros, Dalek Caan, The Shadow Proclamation, the Medusa Cascade, the Osterhagen Key, time being out of sync with the rest of the Universe, Donna, Rose, the severed hand, the three-fold man, River Song, the Time War - I wonder which will be used in the finale and which will be saved for another time. It's funny, I think RTD has this habbit of making up random names and phrases in the hope he can reuse them one day and make you think it was planned all along! For example The Shadow Proclamation was mentioned by Eccleston way back in episode 2 of series 1!

The Doctor regenerates as himself, the hand in the jar regenerates into a copy of The Doctor and Donna is actually Jenny, another clone of the Doctor - The Threefold Man! This would mean the death of the Donna personality but not physical death, so could be 'the loss yet to come'? and she does keep saying she's just a Temp (temporary identity)?
Oracle, Medusa Cascade, on July 3rd, 2008
Donna Must Go Back... The Doctor Must Go Forward... Blue Doctor? Brown Doctor? Bad Wolf Creates Itself. Noble is the Universe. Both of Them.
Ivan, USA, on July 3rd, 2008
Just a counter argument for an above thought: The hand in the jar is DT's doctors. It was cut off in the Christmas Special, and he had just enough "energy" from the regeneration to regenerate it. It wasn't CE's. I love DT's doctor, but i miss CE slightly edgier, smart assed one.

Some of the things that River Song said won't make sense if the doctor regenerates- she recognised him and expected him to recognise her; if the doctor regenerates she would not expect him to recognise her while he's in his tenth body. Also, Queen Elizabeth the first recognised him, and we still don't know what he did to piss her off.
Melissa, Prior Lake, Minnesota, on July 3rd, 2008
River Song knows the Dr by this face (so young) so no, he can't regenerate. Though they could always just write her off and call it a paradox. They know how to compensate for that little trifle.
Dan, Sheffield, on July 3rd, 2008
I missed a few episodes. But i notice Eve Myles not in the DW with TW final episode this week. How come ???. Will we see an appearence or did i miss somthing and she got killed ???
Guy, on July 2nd, 2008
i was hoping for les dennis as the next doctor but david tennant is in ep 13's cast list so ??? maybe a false trail to ake us think is not normal or something???
Johnny Horwich, on July 2nd, 2008
Am i correct in thinking, during the eppisode where the doctor meets his future "wife or misses" that she at first doesnt realise he hasnt met her yet. How would this be possible if he is about to die, or he is going to be change in the near future? Wouldnt she not recognise him at all? how long are they intending to keep the current doctor, personally i hope perminatly because he's the best person for the job in my opinion.
Laura, Devon, on July 2nd, 2008
Here's a thought - the Doctor doesn't FULLY regenerate (possibly because of his hand or something, not sure) he regenerates into the same body and keeps the Tenth Doctor personality, but also acquires the Eleventh Doctor's personality at the same time. Therefore, we end up with a Doctor with Multiple Personality Syndrome...doesn't explain the 'three' though... Meh, it's a good storyline!
Zoey, Northern Ireland , on July 2nd, 2008
I hope that David Tennant keeps being the doctor! Hes the best doctor ever!!!
Mansh, Boro, on July 2nd, 2008
KEY ‘keys open locked doors’ - so maybe the Osterhagen Key may unlock the door to period of the time wars – Makes sense to unlock the ‘Time Lock’ and allow the return of the time lords – more storylines for the future. REGENARATION As for the regen business – the Dr’s (CE) old hand is in the jar in close proximity to the current Dr (Tennant) undergoing regen. By logic old hand grows to become its next reincarnation – Dr (Tennant). The current Dr (Tennant) regens into his next incarnation. Trippy 2 Dr senario. And the three fold bit can be completed with the Dr’s daughter turning up. Possibilities of sacrifice by either/both the new Dr and Daughter – still leaving the Dr (Tennant) alive. PROPHERCY The prophecy of the Dr’s close friend does not making it. Hopefully it is the trusted Tardis – a death dive in order to save the Dr and the universe as we know it. However all is not lost as Rose contains the essence of the Tardis – after all she has looked in to the tardis vortex – and hopefully leaving an imprint that the Dr can use to resurrect and create a new Tardis. Even better if Rose sacrifices herself to become the Dr’s new Tardis – also explains how she manages to jump across universes. Finally long live the Dr …

Yes there are pictures of DT filming the Christmas special, but with Doctor Who being one of the most speculated programmes on the box, don't you think it may be simply a cover by RT Davies? I think we'll see the new Doctor on Saturday.
Obsolete , on July 2nd, 2008
'Three-fold man' maybe David Tennant, his first hand in the jar and his cloned 'daughter' perhaps? Who's betting the death of a companion is Bernard Cribben's character.....he did his stint in one of the early films......besides people keep telling Donna Noble that they are sorry for her loss.....just a thought...
