Exclusive: Russell Tovey talks 'Doctor Who'

Now that the secret of David Tennant's departure is out in the open, all focus is on the identity of his replacement (*). One of the frontrunners is Russell Tovey, who has received endorsement from the almighty RTD himself.

Earlier this week - a couple days before the news got out - I caught up with Mr. Tovey on the set of Being Human to find out how he feels about the speculation.

What's your take on Russell T's comments?
"It's just a fantastic compliment that's been blown up. It's wonderful bollocks, really! It hasn't done me any harm at all. The night before [it came out], he texted me saying 'I made a comment about you being the 11th Doctor, which would be brilliant. Sorry if you get any hassle. I said 'That's cool'. Then it's everywhere. I was getting texts from everyone, and Facebook groups - well, there's only three members - but there's a Facebook group called 'I'd be furious if Russell Tovey replaces David Tennant as the Doctor'. They were all kind of bitchy. I never go on forums either but I did this time."

What were they saying?
"A lot of them were nice. Some of them were saying 'he's too young, he'd make a better assistant than a Doctor', which I agree with. Some were saying 'his ears are far too big for the Tardis'."

How cruel!
"I'm alright. they're not big but I know they stick out. There was a picture of Pog and one of me next to it. I was 'The FA Cup', 'Wingnut'... I was like 'You bastards! You're cruel!'"

I'm guessing your friends were nicer about it.
"I was getting texts from people saying things like 'you were my first kiss, now you're going to be The Doctor'. The first few I was saying 'It's not true, but thanks anyway' but in the end I couldn't be arsed. I was like 'I'm not allowed to talk about it!'"

You appeared in the last Christmas special as Midshipman Frame...
"I was meant to come back and do the finale of the last series, but I was doing a play. They rang up and said 'Russell would like you back in, are you available?' I couldn't do it. Russell sent me his book the other day, which explains what would have happened. It would have been Donna, The Doctor and [Midshipman Frame] in the Tardis looking for Earth. But then I would have got killed by a Dalek, so maybe it's a good idea I didn't come back."

So would you accept an offer to play The Doctor?
"Of course! It's awesome. If it was right now, I'd probably choose the assistant role, because I think Midshipman Frame [could be good] as the assistant."

A full series of Being Human is currently being filmed for transmission on BBC Three early next year. More on that - including details of who's joining Russell on the cast - next week. Russell can also be seen now in BBC One's new Dickens adaptation Little Dorrit.

(*) Now, I have it on veeeeery good authority that the next Doctor has already been chosen. It's an interesting new direction, and the choice (assuming no changes of heart) will probably surprise - and divide - many. The name I've heard isn't Paterson Joseph. Or John Simm. Or James Nesbitt.

It would be nice, it would be so nice, to know who they have chosen to be the next Doctor. I am a spoiler junkie and I hate being left in the dark, as I am sure, many of you are. Digital Spy is a great place to dig up the latest hear say and what, where and when. They are sometimes nice enough to leak out a spoiler or two when they manage to find them. Personally, I like the Doctor just the way he is and I would hate to see him be anything but.

I think Russell Tovey is a bit on the young side to be the Doctor, possibly younger than Davisdon was when he got it. At least he has a slightly longer track record behind him than Davisdon did. I agree that he'd be great as the assistant. He's also quite good-looking!

I just luv Russell and think that he would make the greatest Doctor ever. He is young, cute, and ever so talented! The only thing that could ever make me luv doctor who more is being able to see Russell as the doctor every week!

Catherine Tate for Eleven! DoctorDonna?? Ooooh yesssss!! I'd love it, I really would. She surprised and delighted me in S4 as I'm not a big fan of her style of comedy, but CT's got serious acting chops and proved to be terrific in the role of the companion. After the shenanigans with the Hand, and DoctorDonna going to town very effectively with the Tardis console's levers in the final ep, I think she's capable of ANYTHING!! I can't bring myself to think of the blue box without the wonderfully eccentric Ten though. It is going to really break me up when he regenerates.

russell tovey was absolutely brill in Being Human. I think he would make a great replacement for david tennant. We all loved christopher eccleston and didnt know what to expect when david tennant took over, but having seen russells work in other projects i think it would be fab

I want a fit bloke to play the doctor, isn't it time we had a model good looks doctor? why does he always have to be strange looking? David Tennent was the best from a bad bunch. I think it's wrong to just asume the doctor can't regenerate into a stud xx

i think it will be either... marc warren (hussle etc) kris marshall (my family) Colin salmon (james bond) or smithy from the bill.

Love Russell although I don't think he's right for the Doctor. I'm hoping for someone ginger, personally (Catherine Tate, are you busy?). I'm just so delighted that Being Human is in the works, I can't wait for the series and I just hope it can live up to the promise of the wonderful pilot!

Isn't it obvious, it will be Jonathan Ross's comback

If ever there was link-bait this is it! I'm wondering about someone who has already appeared but under make-up. Julian Bleach, maybe? Or is Patrick Stewart to be No 11? Come on, give us a clue!
Ian, Bolton, on October 31st, 2008
Please oh please not a female Doctor. There's never been any hint of sex change during regeneration for all these years - and it would make Gallifreyan family trees very complicated indeed.
Stu, Bridlington, on October 31st, 2008
Harry Lloyd would be well awesome... unlikely though! And if its a female Doctor then the shark has been jumped, Timelords have definite genders. FACT

Come on you big tees tell us. I'm hoping for Rhys Ifans as Doc 11.
David G, Canada, on October 31st, 2008
Just give us an esoteric clue instead of playing the "na na na, I know something you don't" game. I'd wager you're wrong anyway, so what harm can it do to have us guess.
Ian, Bath, on October 31st, 2008
Rhys Ifans would be the best choice. Properly unhinged like Tom baker :) Tennant was just too wimpy
Jim, Suffolk, on October 31st, 2008
Sean Pertwee?
