So, what do we think of the new Doctor?

Published Saturday, Jan 3 2009, 18:00 GMT | By Neil Wilkes | 401 comments
After a couple months of solid - and at times, erratic - speculation, Matt Smith has just been named as the eleventh Doctor. He looks a bit like this:

It's unlikely you'll have heard of him before - he's only 26! - but his credits include Party Animals and The Ruby In The Smoke opposite a certain Billie Piper.

He'll make his first appearance as the 11th Doctor early in 2010 when, in the last of the four specials, David Tennant's Doctor will regenerate.

But what do you think of this choice? Will Matt make a good 11th Doctor? Add your comments to this entry below!

Matt Smith is ok but something is missing maybe it’s the storyline? As for his assistant I can’t understand what she says half the time (when she does talk) she just mumbles and such poor acting. Let’s hope it gets better in the next few weeks…..

I was sad to see David go but open minded to a new Dr. I agree with previous comments about the script, it is so poor and I just can not take this new Dr seriously. David made me laugh and cry which I dont get with the new one. I know we can not have David back but he is still there in another reality so there is a possiblilty of seeing him, so i say the BBC need to dig deep into their pockets and pay david more to come back!! Please!!!!!!! Sorry Mat you just dont do it for me.

Watching the new series is like I've suddenly gone back to Junior School. The David tennant Era was more like Senior School. It just seems aimed at a much younger audience. Having said that I do like Matt Smith and his portrayal is a change that we were in need of but Amy Pond, no way. She just stands there gazing and simpering and wearing very short skirts so does nothing for me! And the writing is nowhere near the previous standard, still, its early days yet and it can only get better.

I think his head look like either a mushroom, a chef hat or a poof on a square.

To be honest, the question here shouldnt be "what do you think of the new doctor?" But more like.. "What do you think of the new and poor writers on the show?" I think everyone is so obsessed with watching Matt smith, seeing if he can top david tennant in any way. That they have failed to sit down and take in the actual storyline.. i mean come on, last weeks episode all they gave us were colourful Daleks that looked like they had stepped right out of a power rangers episode! Seriously doctor who, is that all you can give us? think back over the previous seasons, how amazing were they?! But now we get a measly star whale and daleks that have had a lick of paint.. ohhh exciting. NOT. Thank you doctor who, you have officially killed it for me. Until they get better writes my expectations will forever be low. RIP doctor who.. i will miss you!

I love him. In his own right hes a amzing doctor. Simpley Funny, but a hint of darkness. people are right to like him. However new theme tune i DO NOT like, or his new assistant. I meean shes nice and all, but weres the acting?

I think I would really like the new Doctor Who, but the music is driving me CRAZY. Could it be more stock and schlock? It sounds like a bad Disney theme park score. Doesn't anyone else notice it besides me and mine? Really. We can't stand it. Matt Smith? I think he'll do fine.

my personal oppinion is tha we should let him act too see wha he's like. but to be honest there will never be another doctor like david tennant or one who fits his shoes because he just played the part so well. i would even go as far too say tha david tennant was a better doctor than tom baker. let give this new guy a shot and see what he's like but to be honest he needs too do sumthing about his chin. its just to big lol

I think that Matt has potential, but the writers need to figure out what lines to fit him with. Like, the viewer should already know whether he's a fun, upbeat, carefree guy (like David, who I heart! but without the heartfelt, somber side) or a serious though smiley guy like Christopher. See, we don't know that yet, because in the preview there was a dumb part when Matt says, 'Yes. I'm the doctor.' But another part when he's all fun and grinning and going 'oooh, fingers!' He needs to be comfortable with the part so that the viewer is comfortable with him. Sigh. Anyway, hope he's good, but I'm still ALWAYS loving David!

I think poeple should stop giving the new face of the Doctor a hard time, i hear a lot of hate for Matt Smith aleady and we haven't even seen his take on the Doctor yet. He has abvioucly been chosen for a reason and although i'll be very, very sad to see David leave our screens, i welcome our new Doctor with open arms!

I will be the epitomy of sad face ;( when DT leaves. Tears shall be shed, as they were when Billie left. However I think DT has made a wise choice in leaving now, before he gets typecast too much as well as pursuing new roles. Matt Smith though is a far tsoo young doctor for the show. What happened to doctors like troughton and Baker? An increase, slight mind you, in age is needed me thinks. Personally I always liked the 96' doctor, He was one of the best. They will lose fans. They've gone for the let's get teens into it..with the younger face....yeah...somehow I think this will fail and the ratings will fall, i shall watch to see if the show goes anywhere, plotlines etc.let's see what 2010 wlll bring.

Well. Well. Well. What have we here? Hmmm? A lot of people with very short memories. (For those of you who are knew to Dr.Who. Ooo did I just write it like that? Is that bad? Should it be Doctor Who?) Anyway. This has happened before, the first time being 1966. The announcement of Patrick Troughton (2nd Doctor). And will happen again. (20--; 12th Doctor announced.) So what!!! Look if you're in it to watch Doctor Who, stick around you may enjoy the programme. Sometimes it has great writting. Acting. Directing. Sometimes it doesn't. If you're in it just to watch David Tennant. Then fine. He's done his bit, now he's moving on. (He won't regenerate back if it all goes wrong...) There must have been something more than that? Something you watched that you liked? It's the same with every actor/Doctor that's gone before. Some just like one Doctor. Some like a bit more. Some people see past all that. See the programme and enjoyed what the lead actor has had to offer to a long running programme. It's survived many things. This programme is a survivor. And not many programmes can say that. I don't believe it will die with Matt Smith. Since the confidential. I've seen his work. I think he's got great potential, (much more than the beloved, hoped for Patterson Joseph. No disrespect.) Matt Smith can act. He's got something. And though he wasn't even in the role yet. His enthusiasm during the confidential had myself and my girlfriend convinced that Steven Moffat has made the right choice. It's like when your school friends leave school, to move somewhere else. You make new friends. The programme needs to change to move on. And this will be a timely change.... And for the record, I've admired all the actors who've put in their worth. Some more than others. And I was a disbeliever with Eccleston. Billie and Catherine Tate. How wrong, was I....

For a moment I thought it was the new James Bond! (still in boarding school) LOL!!! Instead of this youngling, why didn't the Producers opt for an egg? I think an egg has more potential. We finish the first episode on a cliff-hanger as the egg starts to crack. 'Will he be an omelette or completely scrambled?' But really... c'mon! David Tennant's shoes will be hard enough to fill as it is. But to fill them with knee high school socks, school uniform and hairy legs is bloody ridiculous. You may gain a few fans but you will lose more! Get the 1 season of 'Dr who's Schooldays' out of the way as quickly and as painlessly as possible - recast - regenerate - and then get down to the business of making decent Who TV. Thank you!
