"We're not lying, we're not cheating: one of those four people is going to die!" showrunner Steven Moffat told Doctor Who Magazine this month. Those four are of course The Doctor himself, companion Amy Pond, the mysterious River Song and good old Rory Williams.
We've lived through enough DW "deaths" in our time to know that death isn't always what it seems when you travel with The Doctor, but we've been assured that that Moffat is a man of his word in this case. "WE'RE NOT LYING," the magazine squealed on Twitter to the doubters*. "One of those characters PROPERLY DIES in Episode 1."
Rory, of course, has died already, perishing in Amy's arms saving The Doctor in 'Cold Blood'. River passed away in series four's Forest Of The Dead, while bringing back the 4,022 people "saved" to the library computer. There were tabloid rumours of Pond's demise doing the rounds last year - though they predicted a mid-season exit. And The Doctor, well... he's already carked it properly ten times, not counting the occasions he weaselled out of it somehow!
All those things considered though, who do you think will die when Doctor Who returns to our screens for its dark series opener this Easter?
You voted in your thousands for who you thought would be killed off, and here's what you thought...
River Song - 34%
Rory Williams - 32%
The Doctor - 17%
Amy Pond - 17%
*Though they have also given us the cheeky timey-wimey caveat that "TIME CAN BE REWRITTEN"... whatever that means in this instance!
The series premieres on April 23 on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US
