'Doctor Who': Steven Moffat's 5 hints about the 12th Doctor

It's been a little while since the last Week in Geek blog - apologies for the lack of a post last week, but in my defence, I was busy beavering away at Comic Con 2013 in San Diego - which is basically Geek Mecca, so...

Whilst in sunny California - or rather a dim, air-conditioned convention centre - I spoke to Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat about the ongoing hunt for Matt Smith's replacement and his plans for the 12th Doctor's era.

So packed was this four-and-a-half minute video chat, so uncharacteristically loose-tongued was Moffat, that it's worth picking the interview apart and providing all you spoiler-hungry Who fans with a blow-by-blow account - below, check out the five most exciting things that the Moff had to say about the future of Who...

The search has barely begun for the 12th Doctor...

...and that's a direct quote from the man in the know. Granted, it's possible that Moffat was having us on and that Ben Daniels or Ben Whishaw or Ben Stiller has already been cast as Doctor Number Twelve, but if we take him at his word, then it appears we may not learn the identity of Smith's successor for quite some time...

"You don't really want to be doing [searching for a new Doctor] while the media furore is going on," Moffat explained. "You kind of want to sit tight while that's going on and think, 'Alright, we'll get to it in a bit!'"

Older Doctors *are* being considered...

A recurring theme in many fans' outpourings of opinions on the 12th Doctor is the desire to see an 'older' actor take the part - at least, one older than fresh-faced 26-year-old Matt Smith was when he was cast - and Moffat confirmed to us that this is a strong possibility, insisting that there's no desire on the production team's part to appeal to "a Twilight demographic".

"We've never not considered an older Doctor," he said. "It is completely on all the lists we make - there are absolutely older Doctors."

While Matt Smith may be departing, plenty of familiar faces will be sticking with Who - in addition to Jenna Coleman's Clara, fan favourites Vastra (Neve McIntosh), Jenny (Catrin Stewart) and Strax (Dan Starkey) will also continue into the 12th Doctor's era...

"Vastra, Jenny and Strax are all enormously popular characters, and we've got Clara still continuing," Moffat confirmed. "[That] allows us to do [the regeneration] in a very different way from the way that we did it in 'The Eleventh Hour'."

The new Doctor could be very different indeed...

But just how "very different" will this new regeneration be? Moffat hinted at plans to make something a little more outlandish and subversive than Matt Smith's fairly traditional opener - "You can push that [new] Doctor a bit further, maybe, if you've got a familiar world around him," the writer said.

While we're eagerly waiting in anticipation for the 50th anniversary special and Moffat is still putting the finishing touches to the 11th Doctor's festive farewell, the 12th's first full series - to air on BBC One in 2014 - is very much in the works.

"The scripts [are] coming in, we know what we're going to do and how it's going to end, and what it's building to," Moffat revealed.
