I think poeple should stop giving the new face of the Doctor a hard time, i hear a lot of hate for Matt Smith aleady and we haven't even seen his take on the Doctor yet. He has abvioucly been chosen for a reason and although i'll be very, very sad to see David leave our screens, i welcome our new Doctor with open arms!

I will be the epitomy of sad face ;( when DT leaves. Tears shall be shed, as they were when Billie left. However I think DT has made a wise choice in leaving now, before he gets typecast too much as well as pursuing new roles. Matt Smith though is a far tsoo young doctor for the show. What happened to doctors like troughton and Baker? An increase, slight mind you, in age is needed me thinks. Personally I always liked the 96' doctor, He was one of the best. They will lose fans. They've gone for the let's get teens into it..with the younger face....yeah...somehow I think this will fail and the ratings will fall, i shall watch to see if the show goes anywhere, plotlines etc.let's see what 2010 wlll bring.

Well. Well. Well. What have we here? Hmmm? A lot of people with very short memories. (For those of you who are knew to Dr.Who. Ooo did I just write it like that? Is that bad? Should it be Doctor Who?) Anyway. This has happened before, the first time being 1966. The announcement of Patrick Troughton (2nd Doctor). And will happen again. (20--; 12th Doctor announced.) So what!!! Look if you're in it to watch Doctor Who, stick around you may enjoy the programme. Sometimes it has great writting. Acting. Directing. Sometimes it doesn't. If you're in it just to watch David Tennant. Then fine. He's done his bit, now he's moving on. (He won't regenerate back if it all goes wrong...) There must have been something more than that? Something you watched that you liked? It's the same with every actor/Doctor that's gone before. Some just like one Doctor. Some like a bit more. Some people see past all that. See the programme and enjoyed what the lead actor has had to offer to a long running programme. It's survived many things. This programme is a survivor. And not many programmes can say that. I don't believe it will die with Matt Smith. Since the confidential. I've seen his work. I think he's got great potential, (much more than the beloved, hoped for Patterson Joseph. No disrespect.) Matt Smith can act. He's got something. And though he wasn't even in the role yet. His enthusiasm during the confidential had myself and my girlfriend convinced that Steven Moffat has made the right choice. It's like when your school friends leave school, to move somewhere else. You make new friends. The programme needs to change to move on. And this will be a timely change.... And for the record, I've admired all the actors who've put in their worth. Some more than others. And I was a disbeliever with Eccleston. Billie and Catherine Tate. How wrong, was I....

For a moment I thought it was the new James Bond! (still in boarding school) LOL!!! Instead of this youngling, why didn't the Producers opt for an egg? I think an egg has more potential. We finish the first episode on a cliff-hanger as the egg starts to crack. 'Will he be an omelette or completely scrambled?' But really... c'mon! David Tennant's shoes will be hard enough to fill as it is. But to fill them with knee high school socks, school uniform and hairy legs is bloody ridiculous. You may gain a few fans but you will lose more! Get the 1 season of 'Dr who's Schooldays' out of the way as quickly and as painlessly as possible - recast - regenerate - and then get down to the business of making decent Who TV. Thank you!

Bring back David Tennant.
Rosie Learmonth, The Tardis on January 21st, 2009
I think he is too young but who knows my veiws may change as the series processes but he going to have a job outdoing david tennant cus he is THE BEST DOCTOR EVER!! But i spose he can't do it forever I'm not too keen on Matt to be honest I think he looks a bit weird cus his eyes are really beady and uncomfortable to look at DONT LEAVE RUSSEL T DAVIS but if you are looking for a new doctor who series writer then give me a call lol!

I'm not ready for a new Doctor. I still want more Tennant.

Trust Moffat.

Have to say i've never heard of him, and he doesn't look right from your picture, but give him a chance I guess (BBC budgets are lower so i bet his salary is a saving!). It could be an own goal by the BBC mind, viewers will decide.
Alistair Gunn, Bristol on January 12th, 2009
i think that Matt Smith will be great But... I haven't seen him act but he has the right looks for the Doctor. In the interview on BBC one while he was talking he moved his fingers in a way that reminded me of Sylvester McCoy - that made me laugh. I think DT left at the right time while he was on top, always leave the public wanting more. One of the best things about Dr Who is that the show changes everytime he regenerates that's what has kept it going for so long. I am looking forward to the new doctor and writing team. I am hoping for some much darker episodes and I think Matt could deliver
Gail Parker on January 9th, 2009
He seems quite young. But isn't a match for David Tennant. He Just doesnt have what David has. But who knows he just might surprise us all.

I don't want David Tennant to leave! He's the best Doctor Who ever!! He's such a brilliant actor, and i'm sure they'll never find anyone just like him. And too be honest, i don't like the 11th Doctor. :/ And when he regenerates, i'll be like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Adam, Glasgow on January 8th, 2009
im not sure....he doesnt really have the prettyiest face in the world. remember that the doctor has only 2 regenerations left. i hope they know what they are doing. do you think that if things dont work out they will get a new doctor?
Sandra on January 8th, 2009
Extremely disappointed - there are so many others out there that would make a much better Dr and who would be more charismatic.
Chris, North East Wales on January 8th, 2009
He's a strange looking guy isn't he? I thought he was wearing a mask when I first saw him, but no its his real face. Also he's got no eyebrows has he? Correct me if I'm wrong, but most of the Doctors have been relatively good looking. Just passing comment of course. I'm not bothered in the general scheme of things cos I don't watch Doctor Who anymore, its getting too daft.
Alison, Wrexham on January 7th, 2009
I will be so sad when the brilliant actor, David Tennant departs the series of Doctor Who, and he played the brilliant part,so well, and the actor who should have played the New Doctor should have been played by the talented actor David Morrisey, and he would be absolutely fantastic, by playing the leading part, because he is a brilliant actor. But the actor Matt Smith is far too young, and I don't think he would suit the part of the new Doctor at all.
Shelley, California on January 7th, 2009
Unfortunately I'm thinking this choice is going to alienate long time fans. It was "bad" enough to have a Doctor the same age, now to have one so young I think is just going to make it un-relatable. I realize that this show is supposed to be aimed at the kiddies, but COME ON! I hope I'm wrong. After all I had huge reservations about Chris Eccleston as the Doctor and he turned out to be, well, FANTASTIC.
Val Ward, Merseyside on January 7th, 2009
Didn't think a replacement for David Tennant possible. The ultimately best Dr. Who without doubt, Time will tell. I think he is as good as were gonna get I like his difference he had to be to get our interset so will give him a chance, that's only fair, but he better be good, really good 'cause if he's not I'm out!
Jaz, Amsterdam on January 7th, 2009
I think it is a case of second best - the obvious choice would have been Patterson Joseph, BUT as he is one of the main characters in the remake of "Survivors" which got recommissioned for a second series he would not have been available for Dr Who. I've seen the Matt Smith in a number of productions and his over the top, gurning style of acting is completely ridiculous - maybe he will be using 2009 to attend some acting lessons.

So much fun to read all of these comments, I hope DS gets revenue for every posted comment! For those interested in statistics: I counted 200 in favor of Matt Smith, 100 against him and 50 undecided. Seems like most people give MS the benefit of the doubt, which is the most sensible thing to do. Let him prove what he's worth in 2010, I won't lose sleep over it until then. I also noticed that most people who are against MS only want DT to return (quote "bring bk dvd tennant" and "i loved David Tennant,so anyone else isn't good for me"). Though luck, DT has jumped ship, so you either hang on and sail through the storm with the new captain or just abandon ship. If you're a true DW fan, then you'll make the jump into the unknown and see where this brilliant show will take you next. DW has always been about surprises and I can't wait to see what 2010 wil bring... but I'm sure it won't feature a regeneration back into DT ;) Give MS, the Doctor "who looks like he's from Mars" a chance and enjoy the ride.
Nadia, Birmingham on January 6th, 2009
"he IS cute" (from Megan). Indeed, apologies, but I thought that Dr Who's foes (not the actual Doctor) were supposed to scare the viewers . I have seen his acting, leaves a lot to be desired. The producers say he will bring something totally different to the new Doctor Who - dread to think. Doesn't do it for me I am afraid, not just too young, there is something not right about him that I cannot put my finger on.
Rebecca Brooking, Paignton on January 6th, 2009
Yeah! Come on people, everyone loves David which must make it hard enough for the poor guy without the show's fans writing him off without even seeing him play the Doctor! From what I saw of his acting from the clips, he seems ok and I'm certainly going to keep watching! And I'm a massive fan of David, I was devastated when he said he was leaving but I liked Doctor Who before David and I expect I'll like it after him, it'll just be different. And surely that's what Doctor Who's all about, giving people the chance to shine as they face challenges.
Kris, Stoke on January 6th, 2009
Is this going to carry on for the next year? Get a life guys and give Matt a chance. We had exactly the same reaction from the fanboys/men when they cast Billie Piper, David Tennant, Freema and Catherine Tate. Have faith in the show, and the producers ability to know what they're doing!
Jonathan, London on January 6th, 2009
I cant believe people are judging him so quickly, especially after the slamming of Catherine Tate as companion, and she turned out great. I will definetly be watching series 5, but will be sad to see David Tennant leave.
Andy, Liverpool on January 6th, 2009
Whether matt smith suceeds or not will really depend on the writing and direction of series 5. Let's not forget moffet wrote some amaaazing episodes (empty child, blink, to name just two). They really needed to cast an unknown actor like MS because tennant and eccleston were so good. I'm just glad the whole farse that was the Christmas episode (is it David morrisey, isn't it him?!) is over because RTD's pi#5ing about was getting on my wick and spoilt a perfectly good episode for me. The RIP Dr Who comments are bull... I'm only concerned like the earlier chap who bemoaned the fact that some of us are now older than dr who! At least it's not JUST me getting old!
Kelly, Norwich on January 5th, 2009
I think everyone should give him a chance! You can tell by the way he talked that he was an interesting character who will bring something new to the show. I'll be gutted when David Tennant leaves but i'm excited to see Matt Smith as the doctor :) Alot of people here are bitter because he's "too young" but i'd much rather have him, who's likely to bring a fresh new dynamic to the show, then a more mature doctor who promises the distinct possibilty of sending me to sleep! Good luck Matt :)

Gutted!!! was hoping for someone who could at least try and follow on from david tennant. oh well, will watch something else on a saturday night i guess.

What is it with people who judge before this guy has even been seen playing the doctor.I havent heard of this guy but neither did ino chris or david before they played the 9th and 10th i gave them a chance and they were fantastic and so were the many other actors before and i am a true who fan and am only 18 am giving him a chance for me matt is already half there coz he seems to act in a doctor way and when i saw him i thought yes what a great choice coz 1 i fort yes he's gud and i didnt want a female doctor because that wudnt b right if they started the doctor off as a woman it wudnt b right to chance to a man the same goes for it to b a coloured person i look to watching more of david coz he is fantastic but am lookin forward to change and thats what this show does best so rock on 2010 and good look matt even tho i dont think u will need it u will b fab like the many actors before u and i hope people will give matt a break and w8 and c him in action 1st b4 judging and the people who say he is to young i thoght the same but he is only 3 years young than peter n did a ok job i loved peter more in time crash tho but age doesnt matter its how the acting is but any younger wudnt b a gud idea i hope 4 an older doctor 4 his 12th maybe in his 40's 50's sean pertwee id love to c that but i hope matt stays for 3 series at least if he is any gud time will tell said a very wise man the 7th i think lol

I think he'll be interesting as Doctor Who.
David Aitken, Glasgow on January 5th, 2009
Big Big mistake, David Morrisey or Sean Pertwee would have been a better choice, this guy is too young, looks like a Tory Student, the BBC are hoping that it will appeal to the young people, but Doctor Who has turned into Buffy, i have been a fan of Doctor Who since the 70s and okay the special effects were ropey, but it had superb stories, great monsters, villians and most of all a wise old Doctor with a young heart, this new kid, would be okay as Doctor Who's assistant, but not as thee DOCTOR! to be honest im of the old School and i think Russell t Davies has destroyed Doctor Who, they had to use old monsters Daleks, Sontarans. Cyberman, take them away and what are we left with? i wont watch Doctor Who again, i will watch my old collection of classic Doctor who dvds, Hartnell, Pertwee and Tom Baker and the rest, i might even watch Peter Davidson! My advice to the BBC, Doctor who is not Harry Potter and bring back Terrence Dick! RIP doctor Who

i think everyones gone barking mad. david tennant is going and its time everyone got over it! i love him as much as any1 else in the role, but he cant do it forever. i dont see how everyone can judge this new guy when noone has actually seen him in the role yet. people should just look forward to the next series when russel t davies will finally be gone, he is turning the show in2 an absolute joke and i know thousands agree!
Kevin, Northampton on January 5th, 2009
Having been a fan of the show since the early eighties, I can safely say that I will be intrigued to see how it works out. I really don't think the age will matter, likewise the fact that very few people have heard of him (Tom Baker was little known when he started and it seemed to work for him). Alarmingly this will be the first time I will have watched a current Doctor who is actually younger that me. However more importantly for me, he went to the same school as me, and for someone who (however sad this may be) played at being the Doctor in the school playground, its just great.
Nat Kelly, Rugby, Warks on January 5th, 2009
I don't know i cannot imagine him as a doctor I will certainly miss David Tenant but if he is not good then he could always regenerate! Although I must say good luck to the lad I just hope he does not copy previous "Doctors" and makes the role entirely his own. Are they going to chage the TARDIS's interior?
