'Torchwood's Day Four - The Verdict

Just watching those snide, elitist politicians discussing how to put a positive spin on handing over children from the less-privileged provokes plenty of reactions. Given the real-life selfishness demonstrated by MPs in the expenses scandal, their behaviour is eerily plausible. Nonetheless, it is baffling why they barely discuss a combative approach to the 456 given that the aliens have hardly demonstrated their destructive capabilities. In addition, the manner in which Captain Jack's family fall off the radar is a bit awkward what with their prominence in the latter stages of 'Day Three'.
The abundance of overhead aerial shots reek of padding, and the pacing is often subdued until the last 15 minutes. But fortunately there are a number of crowdpleasing moments throughout. The initial reveal of the Benjamin Button-style child in the gas chamber and Lois standing up to the snobby politicians are both highly effective for differing reasons. The disruption of the secret recording by Lois's tears streaming down her contact lens transmitters is a masterstroke too.

Both the deaths of Ianto and Timothy are well written, performed and directed, with neither descending into overly sentimental schmaltz. You really feel for Gwen as she cradles the bloody body of Timothy, or finds Ianto's corpse in the makeshift mortuary. Although low on action by Torchwood's standards, emotional empathy is high up on the agenda. Similarly, it's impressive that Peter Capaldi's Frobisher hasn't turned into a mere 'baddie', as we're given glimpses of the caring father behind the mask he puts up for his vocation.
So then - 'Day Five' awaits. There has been slightly too much build up over the largely impressive first four hours, but as a slow-burning drama (as opposed to action-based sci-fi), 'Children Of Earth' has kept its dramatic plates spinning and some major payoffs lie ahead. At least we can rest safe in the knowledge that Ianto is reunited with his Cyberwoman girlfriend at that great, big Hub in the sky. Ianto who? As if we'd forget...

I just watched day 4 and 5 as i was away.I can't believe they killed Ianto.I love Gareth David-LLoyd.I was hoping they would bring him back in episode 5. I can't see them doing a season 4 as its changed so much.No Owen,Tosh,Ianto and no hub.Its just not torchwood anymore. Overall the series was brilliant but the drath of Ianto disapointed me and episode 5 was scary. xx

Jacks grandson should have turned out to be immortal too. It was quite shocking to see a child shake and die like that on tv. Jack can time travel, he could go back and stop it all before it ever happened if actors want back in the show.

*sob**sob**sob**sob* Fantastic, but poignant, harrowing and incredibly emotive episode. If there were a rating it would be 5 stars, the scene of discussing which 10% of children would die sent shivers up my spine, and made me truly understand how dark Torchwood had gone. TBH I was never much aof a fan before Exit Wounds, now I'm going to have to go and look up series one and two! This ep was the best out of the five.

I completely agree with every comment i have read so far, the BBC has made a huge mistake in killing ianto because they have just destroyed a majour theme to the programme, half of torchwoods fan base, an amazing character and, in my opinion, the show. I doubt that i will be watching the next series of torchwood, that is if there is one after day fives ending. Is it just me or does all TV seem to be depressing this year?

I think the best bit about Torchwood was the interaction between Ianto and Jack. It was funny and heart warming and real. Gwen and Jack would make it to much of the "same old". Bring back Ianto - perhaps Jack could have his DNA cloned.

I only ever watched Torchwood for the Jack/Ianto story and was so annoyed that they decided to kill of Ianto!!! Saying that - I really enjoyed the show.... But if there is a 4th season I won't watch it, unless they somehow bring Ianto back!

Seriously, they need to bring some really amazing characters in Torchwood Season 4 if Ianto won't come back. If not, I wonder how there'll be any chance people continue watching it. Sure, you can't keep the same actors in a series forever, but with Torchwood it was somewhat different - it never got boring with them. Why do they need to kick the best guys out? Now there's Jack and Gwen left, and I suppose Gwen will stay home for the baby now, so Jack's on his own. There must be a completely new crew, and I'm not sure if I want that. As I said, those new crew members need to be as lovely and funny and clever and just adorable as Tosh, Owen, Ianto and Gwen. If not, I'll be SO SO SO disappointed.

Ianto's death was completely unnecessary. I understand it's just a plot device to free Jack to go fuck around the universe. You want examples of the plotholes? It's actually ridiculous how Rhys is given Ianto's duties so Ianto can go to get killed. Jack should have gone to face the alien alone, not bringing his mortal and therefore vulnerable lover with him. And what about evacuating the bulding before taking any kind of action? And what was exactly the plan? Come on!

Overproduced, overacted, overcast, overlong and overscored in the hope that no-one would notice that the script was written by a cliché-shuffling cynic, acted by a ragbag of overpromoted supporting artistes, and directed by somebody Jean Claude van Damme would have sacked. 6.2 million people can be wrong.

I cant see myself watching series 4 without Ianto. I only watched Torchwood for him and Jack. Plus Ianto was the best character for me. Its a shame as I really loved the show and will miss watching it but I can't watch a show that is just Gwen and Jack. That would be torture!

I feel robbed!!! First we lost Tosh as well as Owen and now the best character for me is gone. Without Ianto in the show I will not be bothering to watch the next series unless Jack decides the world owes him a big favour for all he has sacrificed and brings Ianto back. Plus the way the show is going Gwen will die next so whats the point in watching? I bet Torchwood just lost a lot of viewers if you combine Ianto's death with Tosh and Owen's from the previous series. All I can say is bring back Ianto!

That was the single most sad thing I have ever watched and even now I am still crying. This time they have gone too far and I don't think that there will be another episode of Torchwood, but if there is they need to bring back Ianto, otherwise I will not be watching it. Ianto was the best character ever and I love him. Come back soon Ianto.

Guy's stop harping on about the Doctor, he can't be there for everything! After all he's not there for the end of the world! I must admit I wondered why no one called him and then remembered. THE HUB BLEW UP! That put me right. Really enjoying this. Devastated that Ianto is dead. He was absolutley my favourite character. I love that relationships in TW are based completley around who a person is and not what their sex is. Not sure if I'm looking forward to tonight though! All those kids!

Just watched it on iPlayer... must say I was shocked when Ianto died, I mean, come on, that's not exactly fair. However, did anyone else notice he was wearing a waistcoat all in the building and then he was in jacket & tie when they uncovered him... is this a clue or just a mistake? Maybe he wasn't dead in this episode and dies tonight instead? Or maybe I'm looking too hard into this... Want to see if the human race can finally go into war without losing against these strange projectile-vomiting aliens and win ~ but then again, when has a war ever had a winner?

The BBC and RTD have ruined Torchwood by killing off another key character. They fail to appreciate that the fans will be loyal to a show because they like the characters in the show. They've killed Ianto who was mine and others favorite character and they've turned Captain Jack into an even darker character by having him sacrifice his own grandson. The BBC have said the death of Ianto was to further develop the character of Captain Jack but into what a more tragic and darker figure than he is now. If the writers and the BBC care about the fans they will find a way to bring Ianto back and restore Torchwood to the show that the fans love to watch. Many other fans feel the same please go to www.saveiantojones.com and show your support.
