'Torchwood' climbs to 6.2 million

Last night's episode of Torchwood pulled in 6.24m (27%) for BBC One, according to the latest figures.

The fourth instalment of the week-long series, featuring an Ianto-related twist, came top during the 9pm hour and beat the previous high of 5.94m (25.8%) for Monday's opener.

Earlier on BBC One, Celebrity Masterchef took an impressive 5.33m (26.1%) at 8pm, winning its timeslot. Its nearest rival, ITV1's The Bill, put in 4.43m (21.7%). ITV1's audience then dropped to 2.77m (12%) during the 9pm screening of Trial & Retribution.

Over on Five, The Real Goldfinger - Revealed logged 694k (3.4%) at 8pm, then 1.89m (8.2%) tuned in for The Mentalist, down from last week's performance due to the clash with Torchwood.

RHS Hampton Court Flower Show managed 1.85m (9%) for BBC Two at 8pm. The audience then rose to 2.63m (11.5%) during the new series of Mock The Week between 9pm and 9.30pm. The penultimate episode of That Mitchell And Webb Look followed, pulling in 1.85m (7.9%), then 1.16m (5.9%) watched Psychoville, which featured a special guest-appearance from The League Of Gentlemen's Mark Gatiss.

Channel 4's The Home Show, grabbed 1.54m (7.5%) at 8pm, then 1.66m (7.2%) tuned in for Gerry's Big Decision. Later, at 10pm, the Big Brother highlights show interested 1.9m (11%).

Overall, BBC One came top during primetime with an average share of 26.3% to ITV1's 17.1%. Channel 4 was third with 7.3% (+1: 0.6%), followed by BBC Two with 7.8% and Five's 5.4%.

Elsewhere, the final episode of Katie & Peter: Stateside averaged an impressive 1.37m (6.6%) for ITV2 at 9pm, but failed to beat the series high of 1.44m (7.2%) on Thursday, May 21. A further 225k (1.4%) tuned in last night on ITV2+1.

Also, BBC Four's Horizon: 40 years On The Moon put in 332k (1.8%) during the 8pm hour.
