'Torchwood: Miracle Day' grabs nearly 5m

Series four of Torchwood launched with nearly 5m viewers on Thursday evening
while the US version of The Killing slumped to 1.5m, according to the latest audience data.

Torchwood: Miracle Day, starring John Barrowman, premiered with 4.83m (21.1%) on BBC One in the 9pm hour, down by more than 1m viewers on the opening of series three.

However, the Doctor Who spinoff proved too strong for the opening of series two of crime drama Single Handed, which entertained 3.5m (15.4%) on ITV1 from 9pm and 204k (1.2%) on +1.

Also in the 9pm hour, The Killing, an AMC remake of the acclaimed Danish drama, continued with 1.52m (6.6%) on Channel 4, down 670k on last week's UK premiere. A further 311k (1.86%) watched the show on timeshift.

Traffic Cops had 3.79m (17.9%) on BBC One from 8.30pm. Piers Morgan's Life Stories was seen by 930k (7.6%) on ITV1 from 10.30pm and Classroom Secrets educated 2.3m (19.2%) on BBC One from 10.45pm.

On BBC Two, coverage of The Open golf averaged 920k (10.9%) from 9am to 8pm, as well as 114k (1.3%) on the BBC HD channel. Rick Stein's Spain debuted with 2.1m (9.9%) in the 8pm hour and 168k (0.8%) in HD. History Cold Case mustered 1.73m (7.6%) in the 9pm hour and Mock The Week amused 2.16m (11.3%) from 10pm.

Channel 4's Help! My House Is Falling Down built 1.38m (6.5%) in the 8pm hour and 219k (1%) on +1. New comedy Coppers launched with 910k (5.4%) from 10pm and 157k (1.6%) on timeshift.

Over at Channel 5, How Do They Do It? attracted 659k (3.4%) from 7.30pm, before Eddie Stobart: Trucks and Trailers drove away with 548k (2.6%) in the 8pm hour. Cowboy Builders returned with 1.83m (8%) from 9pm. Candy Bar Girls, a new fly-on-the-wall series following the goings-on at Soho's famous lesbian bar, appealed to 725k (4.2%) from 10pm.

Overall, BBC One won primetime with 21.3% against ITV1's 19.9% (+1: 0.8%). BBC Two ranked in third with 8.5%, ahead of Channel 4's 5.5% (+1: 0.9%) and Channel 5's 4.3%.

Elsewhere, new entertainment show Peter Andre Here 2 Help averaged 762k (3.3%) for ITV2 in the 9pm hour and 196k (1.1%) on +1. Magic show Dynamo continued with 731k (3.3%) on Watch in the 9pm hour.
