Cult Spy: Catching Up With 'Torchwood'
The Torchwood team are back! If you can't quite remember who they were, who was sleeping with each who and what the hell went on in the first season then you've come to the right place!

The Basics

The series is named after the Torchwood Institute in Cardiff, a top secret underground base with a team who monitor and deal with alien activity. For the Welsh capital has something called a 'rift' - a rip in the space-time continuum which aliens can literally fall through. Equipped with bits of alien technology themselves, Torchwood work in conjunction with the local police to investigate any strange goings on - of which there are plenty. Bizarre activities aren't just constrained to the little green men though, as there's plenty of eye-opening stuff happening between the individual team members.

Captain Jack

Captain Jack Harkness leads the Torchwood team and brings with him a wealth of experience - he's an alien Time Agent from the 51st Century. He also possesses an incredible libido and no man, woman or intergalactic race is safe from his charms. After being brought back to life in Doctor Who, he is now indestructable and cannot die. There is also an underlying hint that he might fancy Ianto Jones, although his flirtations with Gwen Cooper are more transparent. Jack suddenly abandoned the Torchwood team to reunite with The Doctor, so he might not receive the warmest of welcomes when he returns. In addition, Jack has a murky past as a con man and several 'missing years' that have yet to be uncovered.

Gwen Cooper

An increasingly feisty yet empathetic young lady, Gwen was very much the 'eyes and ears' of the audience in the first season. Working as a policewoman, she stumbled across the Torchwood team and ultimately became a member. She lives with her loyal boyfriend Rhys, although she developed a sexual relationship with colleague Owen Harper. There are definite signs that she has feelings for Captain Jack too.

Owen Harper

Torchwood's medical officer and second in command, Owen is very morally ambiguous at times. For example, in one outing he used an alien spray that makes the victim fall in love with the nearest person - in many ways tantamount to date rape. He is also an expert in seduction, preying on Gwen Cooper and having an affair with her, which followed a similar pattern to his fling with deceased Torchwood member Susie Costello. Conversely, his compassionate side came to the fore when he single-handedly pursued an old man who had raped and killed a young girl many decades ago.

Ianto Jones

For several episodes, Ianto seemed a calm, reliable man of few words, offering general support to the team and driving their van. A dark side soon emerged, for he was secretly hiding his girlfriend in the depths of the Institute after rescuing her from the Cybermen - but not before they partially converted her. During the somewhat tangled breaking up process with her, he was brought back to life by a kiss from the immortal Jack. This wasn't their last kiss either, and it certainly looked like something non-platonic was taking place behind the scenes.

Toshiko Sato

Torchwood's resident computer genius, Toshiko is a trustworthy, very private person liked by the rest of the team. She experienced a degree of enlightenment in one adventure when she gained telepathic powers, hearing the thoughts of others and later seeing apparitions of her own mother. A short-lived relationship with an alien trapped in a female body ensued, but she also has a photo of Owen Harper on her fridge, suggesting that they may have had a relationship or that she is keen on one.
