A bit of 'Torchwood' trivia

Published Thursday, Nov 6 2008, 09:11 GMT | By Neil Wilkes | 16 comments
As we all know, filming on the much-awaited third season of Torchwood - codenamed Children Of Earth (*) - is currently underway in Cardiff and London. I hit up the set a few weeks ago but unfortunately those oppressive press embargoes prevent me from getting my spoiler scoops out for you until nearer transmission, which is looking like end Feb 2009.

However, I did pick up a couple of morsels of Torchwood trivia on my visit that may be of interest...

Is Captain Jack building his own TARDIS?
Next time you watch the show, pay close attention to what's on Jack's desk. The Cap'n has somehow got hold of the same kind of crystal that the Doctor's TARDIS is made from. Apparently his "pet project" is to nurture this crystal in the hope of one day spawning his own time travel machine.

Mind the gap!
Ever wondered about the Hub's rather unusual decor? Well, apparently the black-and-white tiling and curved walls are what is left of a private underground tube system linking all of the Torchwood hubs (an extension of the Victoria line, perhaps?!) Remember that the Cardiff branch is also known as 'Torchwood Three', so this tube line would have linked the Hub with Torchwood One (London), Torchwood Two (Glasgow) and Torchwood Four (location unknown). The tube line is no longer used.

And finally - a video treat...
He's not just an actor, you know. Mr Barrowman is also a comedian, a presenter, a master of the Scottish accent - and a fine singer, as his new single 'What About Us' demonstrates. Click 'play' below to watch the video. Nice checked shirt, John!

(*) All I can say is that the title is a very important clue to the plotline of the new series.

He's a 'master of the Scottish accent' because he's Scottish, LOL

Lets hope Jack is building his own Tardis so we can all go back in time to Feb 2009 to watch it! ;)

Assuming John is trying to show there are more ways to be a couple than heterosexual,I think he should add a donkey and a giraffe in bed, going through the same angst.Loved you in the Canadian search for Maria.June ex pat.

I think the info on the Torchwood tube station was also in the RT article for the first episode.

Great song, should reach top. Superb video, showing a warm relationship from both gay, straight perspective. Need more videos like this, to break down boundaries.

Donna, yes it has been a background prop since the first series. I think it was in a Radio Times preview for the very first episode that John Barrowman said "Jack is growing his own TARDIS", except he called the thing "coral" rather than "crystal".

Surprising that a Scotsman can master a Scottish accent. I assume the writer of this banal piece isn't Scottish and has never met anyone from another country. What next Eve Myles sounds Welsh?

Do some research people he is Scottish (Yes but it was never said that he wasn't... -Neil)

Hasn't the coral been on Jack's desk for quite awhile now?

Nooooooooo. We want spoilers. We want hints. Silly old press embargoes.

A master of the Scottish Accent? He *is* Scottish (well dual nationality Scottish/American)
Jack, Cardiff, on November 6th, 2008
Thanks - but what about the non-spoiler-tastic questions? Were any of those answered?
Cosmo, not far from the Torchwood Hub, on November 6th, 2008
The 'crystal' is actually a piece of coral that you can grow a TARDIS from. It's cream coloured and on the side of the desk nearest the wall if you want to look out for it.
