The executive producer and presenter previously admitted that he was eager to land the former American Idol judge on the reality programme.
The 47-year-old later said that she would consider being a host on the Fox series.
Lythgoe then suggested on his Twitter account that Abdul may appear on Monday night's instalment, E! reports.
"All you Paula Abdul fans please check out next Monday's show," he wrote last week. However, he instead had an empty chair placed next to him with her name on it during the broadcast.
"I've asked somebody to come along and be a guest judge whenever they can, so I've asked [the crew] to put a chair next to me just in case [Paula] ever turns up," he explained.
"It'd be lovely to see her. I'm putting the pressure on her!"
Adam Shankman was recently confirmed as a permanent judge on So You Think You Can Dance.
