Idols slip to number 5 in midweek charts

The Pop Idol finalists are almost certain to miss out on the Christmas number one this weekend, the latest sales figures indicate.
As reported yesterday, rock-pop group the Darkness are on course to top the charts with their festive-flavoured track 'Don't Let The Bells End'.
Sales figures for Monday and Tuesday show that the group have shifted around 48,000 copies so far but are in close pursuit from Gary Jules with 'Mad World', which has sold around 45,000 copies.
It's bad news for the Idols, however, who dropped from three at close of play on Monday to a lowly number five by Tuesday, having sold just 17,000 copies.
The current number one, Ozzy and Kelly Osbourne duet 'Changes', is third in the midweek chart (29,000 copies) whilst Avid Merrion's 'Proper Crimbo' is fourth (21,000 copies).
Pop Idol judge Simon Cowell - who originally declared that if the Idols' single wasn't the biggest seller of the year he would eat his hat - told The Sun that he had already accepted defeat.
“We are not going to be the Christmas No1," he said. "It will be The Darkness or Gary Jules. We are a victim of our own success because we put the single on the Pop Idol album that was out last week. It has already sold 300,000 copies, so in effect we threw away a potential 300,000 single sales. I love The Darkness record and I’m more than happy for them to get the Christmas No1.???
