Gareth Gates gets 'last chance' at success

Published Wednesday, Jul 28 2004, 16:19 BST | By Neil Wilkes
Pop Idol runner-up Gareth Gates has been given one last chance to score a hit record, the Daily Star reports today.

Recent reports had suggested that Gareth, 20, had been dropped by Simon Cowell's BMG but - for now at least - he's still signed to the label.

"Gareth signed a multi-album deal with BMG, but there are options within the contract allowing the label to pull out at any stage," a source told the newspaper.

"His last album didn't sell anywhere near as well as it should given his high profile and exposure. As a result, the pressure is on him to come back to the label with songs good enough to convince them to carry on with him."

In contrast to Gareth, Pop Idol winner Will Young has gone on to enjoy continued success, recently landing a £500,000 advance for his upcoming third album.
