Sky1 Autumn launch: '24', 'Caprica', Cilla...

Published Wednesday, Aug 6 2008, 16:34 BST | By Neil Wilkes | 20 comments
Last night, at a very hot and sticky East London venue, Sky1 unveiled its revamped look and Autumn schedule. First point of note, the channel will henceforth be known as "Sky1" and not the BBC-like "Sky One" or indeed, the amusing alternative "Sky Onc".

The Autumn lineup is comprised mostly of returning hits, including two US shows on a fast-track turnaround following their Stateside broadcasts, plus a few new shows (Cilla, Noel... together with Gladiators it's a complete comeback of Saturday night TV from the 1990s).

Here are the highlights:

  • The fourth season of Bones in September, beginning with a two-hour premiere filmed in London

  • Two-hour prequel movie 24: Exile in November

  • The fourth season of Prison Break, beginning September 8

  • The four new Futurama movies, split into 16 half hour episodes

  • The new season of Cold Case

  • The two-hour backdoor pilot of a Battlestar prequel, Caprica

  • The 20th season of The Simpsons, including the first ever post-watershed episode

  • A new series of Ross Kemp On Gangs, plus specials Ross Kemp: A Kenya Special and Glue Kids Of Kenya

  • A new series of Are You Smarter Than A 10-Year-Old? with Noel Edmonds

  • Hairspray: The School Musical, a new entertainment show fronted by Denise van Outen that sees a group of schoolkids attempting their own version of the musical Hairspray

  • A new reality show with Wayne Rooney seeking to find the next generation of football talent

  • A new "animated" dating show with Cilla Black (How about bringing back Surprise, Surprise instead? Mr Woolfe, are you listening?)

A bit annoyed that adverts on tv state Prison Break (plus others) starting 31 Aug 08 ad yet on here it says PB starts 08 Sep 08. Can we not get something before America???

I hate it when people say Sky Onc - it's so annoying. Say Sky One!

Don't mean to nit pick but surely the first post water-shed episode of The Simpsons was the one where Homer starts taking medical marajuana? (Argue with the Sky Onc press pack, not me! I'm a good girl I am.... -Neil)

It sounds alright by me. I think Sky1 is a good plan (although it's kind of stealing Virgin1's idea). Have they forgotten about the Simpsons episode "Weekend at Burnsie's", which only ever airs post-watershed due to its drug content?

Re, 'Onc' - At least I wasn't the only one thinking the 'e' looked more like a 'c' ! Don't care about Noel, Cilla, Denise or Wayne (particuarly don't care about Wayne-overhyped-Rooney). Do care about Simpsons, 24 and Cold Case. Am also having Lost-withdrawel, so looking forward to that come spring! Anyone know if it's true Sky have got the rights to Fringe, and if so, when that's suppossed to air?

Where is Rescue Me? (Sadly, as previously reported on Tube Talk, Sky Onc Sky1 has decided not to pick up the show -Neil)

So glad I gave up my Sky subscription, definitely not worth even the basic package price. There is plenty of great stuff on Freeview/Freesat's lineup, more than anyone should really watch in a week, so why bother paying for Sky 1? I think a lot of people talk up Sky 1 in order to justify the expense to themselves, "it's costing me £20/30/40 a month, so it must be good?!" Sorry to be so controversial, but can you seriously tell me that that a lineup full of tired series, C-list celebrities and unoriginal programming is worth the money?

Without Star Trek, Sky1 could never be good.

24, Bones, Futurama, Simpsons and Caprica. Look forward to seeing all of them....on DVD :( Come on Virgin Media - get us back this channel!!!

The first post-watershed Simpsons episode was actually "Weekend at Burnsie's" - where Homer uses Cannabis - in season 13 and has only been shown after 9pm on Sky. Of course you knew that already ;)

are u kidding me ? this line up is bad; sky once was very good, thesedays sky once is all about endless reruns and these few shows are just smoke in the eyes. Where are, for examples, new tv series made by sky1 or made by usa networks ? where are they ? we pay to watch this channel, we view its adverts, still, it 's a very big disappointment.

The four Futurama movies were always supposed to be half an hour episodes, they got combined togeteher to make the movies.

A cracking line-up. Wish Virgin and Sky would sort their wrangling so I can enjoy it on cable, and in HD please.

Nottoo happy about the futurama films being split into episodes but at least were getting them :). I think Sky One looks much more appealing than Sky1 Personally again but then maybe i dont fit into the target audience. :/ Looks quite promising anyway - i just need to catch up with my DVD collection of Prison Break.
