'Robin Hood': The future
Published Thursday, Aug 7 2008, 00:02 BST | By Neil Wilkes | 29 comments
So, by now you'll have read the announcement that Jonas Armstrong is to leave Robin Hood at the end of the upcoming third series. If you haven't, click here to do so, then come back and we'll discuss.

First, some scoop on what actually happens in series three.
Following the events of the series two finale (the untimely murder of Marian at the hands of Gisborne), Robin returns "older, tougher and hell-bent on revenge".
Meanwhile the Sheriff (Keith Allen) is "more precarious and unpredictable than ever" as new threats loom. Joining Robin's gang is Friar Tuck (a notable omission up to this point), who quickly becomes one of Robin's closest allies.
Robin will make his exit in the series finale in scenes described as "explosive" and "nail-biting". Read: death!
Despite the exit of Jonas Armstrong, the BBC has remained adamant that the series can continue. But how can it do so without its titular character? Perhaps the part of Robin will be recast? Maybe the series will be renamed, or a spinoff will be born? Perhaps even there will be a bizarre Doctor Who crossover, revealing that Robin is in fact a Time Lord with the ability to regenerate?

I don't like the way that series 3 is going. Some things are good like Prince John and Isabell. I do not care for kate, she isn't half the actress Lucy Griffiths is. Nor is she beautiful, she's dull and I don't like that all the men fall in love with her and Robin gets her. It was a very bad move to take maid Marion out of the series. End of discussion! You should of stuck to Robin Hood instead of doing a Dr. Who do like : ( .

I think that the last part in the PH is really stupid because why would he be a time lord because they didn't show that he new about technology and stuff in the first two series and in series three I think that it should be more exciting and more alive which the first two were but I think the the sheriff and Gisborne should died because they kill Robins love and that if Robin dies after he killed the sheriff and Gisborne then he will know that he has for filled his task and his soul will go to heaven and join with Marians.

I think Jonas Armstrong is a great Robin Hood. At first I wasn't sure he could carry the role but he has and beautifully. Sometimes his charm and humor remind me of Errol Flynn in the role. Jonas has shown he can be funny, dramatic and romantic what more could you want.

I thought S2 made an attempt to darken things. Marian's death was obviously a major choice. I think moving the series into a generation later, with Gisbourne, repentant, having fathered a son, who will become the new Robin. Armitage, with his beard grown in ( albeit trimmed lol) could play the lead. He is a force on screen & his talent needs to be used. That said---I grew very much to like Jonas Armstrong. Bravo on all counts to the excellent cast.

i hope they find a new unknown actor to come in to the fold and take over as Robin or robin's cause! it would breath new life in to the show and maybe go on for another 3 series as a result..

I have to admit I find Guy of Gisbourne much more interesting than I ever found Robin....His is a character that I've loved seeing all the layers being revealed. I think he could cleverly be transitioned to taking Robin's place. After killing Marian I'm expecting to see him having to resolve alot of demons in series 3. I think it would be wonderful if the writers could take the scene-stealing Guy and transition him into becoming the new Robin Hood.....if the gang could accept Alan of Dale back surely the writers can cleverly bring them to accept Guy's desire to atone all of his misdeeds. I think a Robin Hood with a darker tone would be very entertaining.

I have been watching the series here in America on DVD and am almost done with Season II. Now that I'm spoiled for the ending and have found out Jonas is leaving, I have to agree with the poster who stated that the series is going the way of the old Robin of Sherwood. I like this show better than the old one, so I will be sad to see the cast changes. However, I believe the show can go on, and I love the idea of moving it to the future. It would be interesting. If not, they could always come up with a great idea. After all, you folks on the other side of the pond breed the majority of the great actors of the world, so it should be a cinch to find someone to star on the show. Also, that Connery comment was cruel. Tsk, tsk. Poor guy - he did do a great job as Robert of Sherwood. That is all. I'm off to dream about Toby Stephens, who is smoldering hot!

ALL the actors were only contracted for 3 years - so really he isnt leaving - he is just not renewing his contract. They may do a 'Robin Of Sherwood', (a much better show IMO) and have someone else lead the gang - as they are always ramming down our throats 'WE are Robin Hood'. Meh! Who cares. He will not be missed by me.

From all that's been written, all the major roles were contracted for three years, so I hardly call that "quitting." Can't imagine it would be the first time a major player in a series has been replaced for the series to continue. The name of the program "Robin Hood" not "The Jonas Armstrong Show". The addition of additional big names like Toby Stephens and William Houston, as well as new female roles could keep the pace lively and stories coming. We will see in series 3 just how long it takes to replace Marian in Robin Hood's affections, as well as who winds up the winner of the Robin Hood/Guy of Gisborne fight-to-the-death. However, if Robin's "quitting", we might already know the answer.

Obviously Jonas has got to leave BEFORE he becomes the 11th Doctor Who. He can't do both roles on Saturday night !
