So, what's on this 4Music channel then?

Published Tuesday, Aug 12 2008, 22:37 BST | By Neil Wilkes | 24 comments
This Friday night Channel 4 launches a brand new digital channel, 4Music, replacing The Hits on Freeview, Sky and Virgin.

As you'd expect, the station offers a fair amount of music-related programming - Transmission, Live From Abbey Road, The Album Chart Show all feature - but there are also entertainment shows in the lineup.

The Friday Night Project, aka The Sunday Night Project, is a regular fixture, airing Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10pm (bizarrely, not on Friday nights or indeed, Sunday nights).

The most recent series of Shipwrecked will also be repeated on the channel, weeknights at 6.30pm alongside spinoff show Shipwrecked: The Third Island.

Finally, there's reality series Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search For The Next Doll, Wednesdays at 9pm.

The obvious question is, 'what does this mean for E4?' Apparently E4 Music - the popularity of which helped spurn 4Music - has already been recommissioned until next June, after which the strand will be reviewed. In the meantime E4 has been stocking up on new daytime content, recently signing archive deals with Warner Bros. and Fox that has brought now-ended shows such as Gilmore Girls, Roswell, Kevin Hill and Dark Angel to the channel. That's no bad thing, surely.

How does the 4Music lineup sound to you? Which classic shows would you like to see repeated on E4 next? Click the link below to add your comments to this entry!

It's going to be rubbish. Freeview viewers will no longer be able to watch any music thanks to TMF already having shows on most of the time, now I'm going to have to put up with Shipwrecked on my music channel?!? Please, no.

I am very disappointed that this is happening. I would prefer to keep the Hits as it is, I do not want to see Shripwrecked repeats or other channel 4 programmes not really related to music. It is a real shame!

I would rather they have more music programmes.... when they showed the Hollyoaks cast in the 4Music advert I was cheering for possibly a 4Music run of the Hollyoaks Music show..but unfortunately I see no further details of that.

Have to agree with many of the comments so far. This sounds like just another TMF type channel. I no longer watch TMF in the evening anymore because of the reality shows and other rubbish. Freeview needs a decent music video station, OK The Hits may not have been great but it was the closest we had to a proper music channel showing actual music videos. Channel 4 already have enough other channels to show their repeats, why this one too?.

Oh great another "music" channel with hardly any music on it.
Beki, Walsall, on August 13th, 2008
I presumed that because some of the Hollyoaks cast were in the advert, we may be getting to see some classic HO, evidently not.

So The Hits is going off freeview is it then and we are left with TMF and this channel? what a load of crap if you ask me

I am really not impressed with what this new channel proposes - T4 has become extremly boring - the presenters are dull and far too cynical and i have a sinking feeling that they are going to continue this theme on 4music - t4 seems to soully aim at the section of the market that is fans of bands like coldplay and amy winehouse which have thier niche but what about the rest of us out there who like a really eclectic mix and hate being patronised to by people who come from rich backgrounds and who come across as really up themselves, vain and boring? so not only is there never anything decent to watch on weeekends on channel 4 there will be nothing decent to wacth on 4 music!!! oh help! the only saving grace is the welsh presenter who other than having had a quick ogle i have no idea what his name is!!! At least E4 music is on in the mornings and we can ignore it if its too bad - but for those of us that have freeview we only have two music channels and one looks like its going to be dire!!! varity is the spice of life you know - i wonder if the peopel planning this have forgotton it?

I loved the hits, this sounds like more yoof garbage. I won't bother.
Rich, Derby, on August 13th, 2008
iam not impressed at least the hits played music. it sounds like they are going to turn it in to another e4
Ricardo, Brighton, on August 13th, 2008
Shipwrecked - Music? Sunday Night project - Music why not put heartbeat on there - after all that has a theme tune that was released as a single.
Nick, Bournemouth, on August 13th, 2008
Yeah - they are showing the X tour on Friday! That will be f**king fantastic!!
Lene, Preston, on August 13th, 2008
I like The Hits! Will really miss it, I want to see music videos, not TV shows like Shipwrecked. There is a lack of music channels on Freeview anyway!
Laura, Southampton, on August 13th, 2008
As if we don't have enough C4 and E4 repeats as it is! How are people with freeview meant to watch music videos now?
Brenton-Lee, Paignton, on August 13th, 2008
It Did Sound great but The Hits was ment for Freeview for music Videos, and TMF has changed in the last 2 years. its going to be a little dissapointed, I Was Wondering if Hit40UK Charts was going on it.
Tom, Wolverhampton, on August 13th, 2008
I personally hate the idea - the one channel on freeview that constatnly had music videos on was 'the hits', and now C4 is turning it into another crappy TMF with hardly any music. I am really dissapointed.
Richie Wild, Wirral, on August 13th, 2008
so more like 4(not much)Music then? :(
Sam, Manchester, on August 13th, 2008
4Music - Shipwrecked isn't music. Show Re-runs of the early years of the word
Scott, Edinburgh, on August 13th, 2008
sawthe kylie concert advertised for friday night, we saw her live and it was amazing so will defo be tuning in, what a start !!!
Jon, Essex, on August 13th, 2008
Music channels are annoyingly and increasingly playing less and less music videos. I can't for the life of me understand why they feel the need to show programmes and not music videos! 4Music will probably be the worst thing to happen in place of the Hits and more E4/Channel 4 repeats is just what we don't need!
