Pilot Reviews: 'Eastwick' (ABC)
Published Friday, Aug 7 2009, 13:24 BST | By Dan French | 7 comments

In a nutshell: Based on the 1987 film The Witches Of Eastwick, the small screen version sees three ordinary women discover that they possess witch-like powers.
Pilot premise: Three women, Joanna, Roxy and Kat (Lindsay Price, Rebecca Romijn, Jaime Ray Newman) have a chance encounter at a local fête, during which they each simultaneously throw a quarter into a fountain. Post-party, each of the women discovers they now have slightly 'odd' traits: Joanna has the ability to persuade; Roxy has startling premonitions; Kat makes bizarre things happen after emphasising certain words. Freshly-equipped with these new powers, the girls also become best friends. They then meet the mysterious and charming Daryl Van Horne, who seems to have knowledge of their predicament...
The whens and wheres: The series is due to premiere Wednesday, September 23 at 10pm on ABC. No UK broadcaster has yet acquired the show.
Dan says: Not the strongest contender in the Fall calendar, but it's equally inoffensive. Eastwick has a slightly Mary Poppins-esque feel to it, and the magic is kept minimal - instead, the pilot focuses on each woman's life before building them up as friends. It's quite comical in parts, although it won't have your sides splitting.

TV is a commercial medium, and therefore, its programming is mostly aimed at satisfying an audience of passive consumers. That said, Eastwick is not much different than a lot of the extremely bad TV masquerading as something original. The characters for instance are written within the tight confines of stereotypes, which we the viewer is supposed to find refreshing. And since its based on John Updikes novel or the movie, its probably fair to se where things are predictably headed. Most of which will be a lot of come-uppances for most of the male characters. Whom incidently are writen with painful one dimensionality. Jeez how many times do writers feel obligated to pull out the inattentive mindless father. (Because TV isn't littered enough with infantile males to enhance empathy for female characters.) Hey watch Battlestar Eastwick writers and learn how adults write. Goodness me with all this originality going on, its a wonder that I yawn during the predictable retorts of the characters. Eastwick is not a good show, but niether is most network TV.

If the film was a slap in the face to John Updike, this sounds like a good kicking as well. Notice, they waited til he had died to green light this ordure. I shan't watch that's for sure.
