Q&A: Anna Torv talks 'Fringe'

Warning: This entry contains major spoilers about season two of Fringe which some fans may prefer to avoid!

It's been a tough season for Fringe's Olivia Dunham. Her partner was killed by a shapeshifter, she's received multiple death threats herself, and to cap it off, she's recently discovered that her would-be lover is from the alternate universe. Will she ever get together with Peter? Will she inform him of his true identity? And will Leonard Nimoy return as the mysterious William Bell? Armed with these questions and more, we caught up with Fringe's leading lady Anna Torv.

The last episode left things on a massive cliffhanger with Olivia discovering what she did. How does she cope with that knowledge about Peter?
"That's the next couple of episodes! What do you do? Surely he would wanna know, but... Do you say it or keep calm? It'll definitely rock the boat. Walter obviously doesn't want Peter to know, otherwise he'd have told him earlier."

Why do you think Walter has kept it a secret for so long?
"The episode 'Peter' kind of deals with that and I love the writers for doing this particular episode because you kind of get all of those answers. It's like Walter's plea, his justification and his explanation. I think by the end of that, you understand. But whether he sticks with that or not, I don't know yet..."

How will this knowledge affect Olivia and Peter's relationship going forward?
"I think that 'Jacksonville' is the episode that pushes us forward with a huge amount of momentum towards the end of the season. It all gets mixed up and then you find out what the drive is behind all of this. It's the big spanner in the works! The secret definitely has a huge impact on the lives of everyone involved."

We saw them almost share a kiss. Would you like to see them take that step?
"No, I don't think so. I think that when you watch them all the time, you think about what would happen. But they'd get together and stay together, or they'd get together and break up. I like that it's undefined. You're not quite sure what it is and I don't think either of them are either."

How do you think Peter would react if he found out that he's from the alternate universe?
"That's what everybody's afraid of! With all the information we have about Peter's past, we know he could go either way. Would this split the group? That's the fear. Otherwise it would be out in the open already."

Olivia's been abused, she's almost been killed, and now she's keeping this big secret. How much more can she take?!
"God knows! She's like a robot! That's why she doesn't smile - I wouldn't either! She takes a lot. I want her to break out - I keep waiting 'til the day when she rips her suit off and screams. I don't know whether that will come or not!"

Is there a chance that we'll delve further into her past?
"We have a little hint of it in 'Jacksonville' and then it's a slow burn. We slowly discover more and more about her. The reveal about Peter, that's a hint of where this season is going - instead of last season's 'What is this?' it's now 'Who is this?' and as we get towards the end, it'll be more of a 'Why?'"

Any chance of Leonard Nimoy returning at a later date?
"I hope so, I really do. He's just such a beautiful man. He's extremely graceful and gracious. There's a presence about him that would be there whether he was Leonard Nimoy or just a man! He's got a gorgeous essense to him."

Have you entered discussions for season three yet? How likely is it that you'll be renewed?
"I hope that we get to, but we haven't discussed it yet. I think we'd all like to. There's so much left to cover - we don't know anything about Olivia! I'd like to see her at the end of the night going through shots of tequila! We know so little about her that to find out anything else would be nice."

Fringe returns Thursday, April 1 on Fox in the US and continues Tuesdays on Sky1 in the UK.

It all depends on what Walter has to say via an explanation to Olivia. If he has no justification and simply doesn't want Peter to know, then as the perpetrator, it's Walter's responsibility, and not up to Olivia to be left holding the bag. She needs to give Walter a suitable and effective ultimatum to force him to accept his responsibility and tell Peter. However, I've got a gut feeling he has a very important reason not to, and his reason might have to do with rescuing Peter from something.

I really think Olivia should tell Peter...but then again, it's really not her secret to tell. I would like Olivia somehow get Walter to tell Peter himself... but I doubt either of those things will happen. I see Peter finding out through a 3rd party and will be very upset, more so at Olivia for "seeing" the truth and keeping it from him. It's going to change everything when he finds out... I just hope that Peter will get over it and be able to forgive both of them.
