Tube Talk

By

Samuel: "I enjoy reading Tube Talk, but cannot see that its been updated, which is pretty poor from this great website. Please give me an update"

Neil: Please excuse my unexpected absence last Saturday. I'll make up for it if you make it to the end of the piece.

Philip Hetherington: "Do you know if 5 will be showing any more episodes of The Shield?"

Neil: Good news: Season four of The Shield kicks off Saturday, July 23 at 11.05pm. Joining the regular cast in ep 1 is Glenn Close as Monica Rawling, the replacement for Captain Acevada. But (highlight to read spoiler) she leaves by the season's end.

Jono: "You recently claimed that ITV anglia east would launch on Sky Digital this week, but as yet I cannot pick it up. Any reason why, and is there a new date set?"

Neil: According to our lineups guru Darren Shelley, Anglia East launched on June 23 as planned but not all viewers are able to pick it up as yet. Meantime you (or indeed anyone in the UK) can add the station manually via Services-4-4 and using the settings 10.758V, 22.0, 5/6.

Jack Hamilton: "The BBC has the rights to Queer As Folk USA Series One and Two but they have only ever shown Series One. E4 recently aired Season Three. When will the BBC ever get round to utilising the licence fee spent on acquiring Series Two and show it?"

Neil: "No immediate plans," I'm told, despite the fact that they do have it.

Darren Hall: "When does the 2nd series of Rescue Me come to sky one?"

Neil: Later this year, in all probability.

Luke: "How long is the average commercial break during prime-time. I'm sure its getting longer so the programmes must have to shortened to accomadate for the ads."

Neil: Ofcom rules state that for the terrestrials, the total amount of advertising in any one day should not exceed an average of seven minutes per hour of broadcasting, with a restriction of an eight minute average in the periods 6pm - 11pm and 7am - 9am. Within these rules, the broadcasters squeeze more adverts into the most-watched programming windows - this is why at night you'll see but a few adverts to bring the average down.

Damon Walker: "Is there any chance we will see any of the current series of 24 on terrestrial television at any point in the near future?"

Neil: My strategically-placed spies tell me that Sky, who own the full UK broadcast rights to seasons three onwards, are not offering up the FTA rights to anyone else. So I'm afraid you'll either need to buy a dish or the season boxsets, which are available for around £35 from Amazon.

Rob: "Do you know if Britney & Kevin: Chaotic wil be shown in the UK? If so, when?"

Neil: I'm told that Channel 4 have picked up the rights to this but no official word as yet.

Natalie Compton: "I missed the last programme in the Only Human series on C4 (The Strangest Village in Britain). Will it be repeated?"

Neil: Nothing in the schedules for the immediate future, but your best bet is to keep an eye out for a repeat either in the early hours or on new factual channel More 4, which begins in October.

John: "A reader last week asked for a start date for Night Night. Well I can confirm this will start in September and is believed to be the 13th of September at 9pm. The DVD is released a day before this of series one."

Neil: Thanks for the info, John!

Katie: "I was just wondering if you know if/when they are planning a new series of BBc 1's RailCops? If not do you know if UKTV People are planning to show any more repeats?"

Neil: No word on a new series as yet, but series two begins airing on UKTV People this Sunday (July 10) at 10pm.

Shaz: "I remember seeing an article on DS last year about the stars of cult kids TV show 'Rainbow' making a come back, in a sitcom aimed at adults. Is this still going ahead and if so when can we expect to see a broadcast?"

Neil: No word on a full time return, however Zippy and George (both firm favourites at DS Towers) are back as hosts of a one-off Channel 4 show called 'Zippy and George's Puppet Legends.' The programme was due to air last Thursday but was postponed (due to the London bombings) and is now likely to air some time in the next few weeks.

Suzanne: "Do you know whether the recent Beethoven three part series starring Paul Rhys on BBC 2 will be coming out on DVD and/or VHS?"

Neil: Nothing planned at present.

wamdue: "Will fives gritty urban crime show Murder Prevention, be back for a 2nd series? if so when?"

Neil: Alas not. The show was a "one-off," apparently.

Damon: "Are south park planning to show any new episodes of south park as they seem to be repeating the same 6 episodes in double bills?"

Neil: "From Saturday 9th July Paramount Comedy will debut new episodes of South Park series 9," says a spokeswoman. "These episodes are brand new from  the US and will be shown as a double bill over two weekends from 9pm, with a repeat of the four episodes the following Friday." Only the first seven episodes of the new season are being shown now, with the rest due to TX in January.

ABC1: "Are there any plans to bring ABC1 to sky in the near future?

Neil: Yep, most likely before the year is out.

hodan: "could u tell me if contender getting another series for sure and when it is going 2 be shown in the uk as soon as u find out"

Neil: I'd say it's fairly likely, whether NBC decide to renew it or not. There's talk of Burnett and Stallone taking it to ESPN instead. If so, it's an almost cert that ITV2 will pick up the rights again.

Lee Evans: "Neil will there be another series of the 4400 on sky one & if there is please tell me when. Plus will i\'m a celebrity get me out of here join itv1 again this year?"

Neil: Yes, and yes - both later in the year, with the latter expected in November.

Philip: "My friends and I love the Joan Rivers Position on 5. (Some of have been featured on the show) It reminds us of Graham Norton's shows. I have noticed that next week's episode with Jodie Kidd is the last in the series. However, I have read that they filmed double the amount of episodes. When are they supposed to air? I feel slighted that episodes with Jenny Eclair and Brigitte Nielsen (in which there was such a brouhaha over a big fight they both had on air) are being postponed. Why can't they just show them all in a row and then get her back in a few months to film more episodes, that is if there is to be more episodes filmed after the missing 6. What do you think?"

Neil: I'm told that the "final" six episodes will be shown "later in the year" - probably the Autumn.

Mikey: "When will 'Lost' make its UK premiere? I understand Channel 4 has got the rights.

Neil: For Mikey, and the trillions of other emails I've had on the subject, there is good news at last. The show will premiere at 10pm on Wednesday, August 10 (see here for more). If you watch just one new show this year, you must watch Lost. It's brilliant. Honest.

Charles Gittens: "I usually watch this drama on BBC America but recently it has disappeared. I have checked the listings extensively too no
avail what's up . I am emailing you from the USA."

Neil: Series one begins re-airing Sunday, July 17 at 9pm ET/PT.

James: "Why don't ITV1 move Emmerdale to 8pm every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, seeing as they could get higher viewing figures out of their impressive audience share?"

Neil: Several reasons. Slotting a half hour show in at 8pm would mess up the rest of the primetime schedule, which prefers hour-long series. Moving the soap to 8pm on some days but keeping it at 7pm on others would also confuse (a lot of) viewers.

Paul: "When do the new series of the fantastic WB programmes start over here in England? Everwood (UK Living), 7th Heaven (Hallmark Channel), One Tree Hill (E4/Channel 4). For Everwood it will be Season 3. For 7th Heaven it will be Season Five. For One Tree Hill, Season 2."

Neil: Everwood is not scheduled at present, but the second season begins replaying weekdays at 2.50pm from August 15. Hallmark have failed with their attempts to land the next season of 7th Heaven while the second season of One Tree Hill finally kicks off Thursday, July 21 at 9pm on E4.

Neil: To end with, a special treat: To celebrate Biography Channel's music month in August, I have a few special exclusive Biography-branded rain capes to give away to the persons who email me (link at the top of the page) with the most inventive idea for a new channel.

That's it for now - more next Saturday!
