To celebrate its birthday, we're going to listen to Buggles' 'Video Killed The Radio Star' (the first vid played on the channel), and for our Friday Fiver, we've picked out the best ever MTV shows.
The Jon Stewart Show:
Yes, that Jon Setwart. The man who now nails politicians every week on The Daily Show, started out with the 'I Want My MTV' crowd in the early '90s. Watch a clip of one of his early episodes below:
Beavis & Butt-head
Thank the Lord, Beavis & Butt-head will be returning later this year to stick their sniggering oar into the preposterous world of pop culture. The original MTV bad boys brought some snarling satire to '90s TV:
Jersey Shore
Brash, ugly, offensive, loud, obnoxious and a bad influence. These are just a few labels that have been thrown at MTV down the years and never more so than when it launched enfant terrible Jersey Shore in 2009. Whatever you think of the show, it's impossible to ignore:
Total Request Live
Anyone who grew up with posters of Britney, Christina and 'N Sync or cut their rock chops with Eminem, Blink-182 and Limp Bizkit will have fond memories of the TRL years on MTV. When it ended in 2008, it was the end of an era. Reality TV had won and the days of music videos on MTV were nigh:
The Real World
Some would call it the first and best reality show. They'd be wrong of course, but after 25 seasons, the impact and influence of MTV's longest-running series can't be denied. The first series way back in 1992 changed the future of reality telly forever, and naturally, we're incredibly grateful for that:
