Whether they steal the limelight from their human co-stars or are just cuddly additions to the family, there is no denying that TV pets make our favourite shows even more delightful to watch.

Here we look back at the best of pets in television history and narrow the list down to just five special pets. Let us know what you think of our final five and give us your verdict on the best TV pet of all time.

Brian - Family Guy
Not only is Brian the dog a loyal and friendly member of the Griffin clan, he provides some cracking jokes too! An alcoholic, a womaniser and strikingly human, but he is still unable to resist playing 'fetch' or having an unexplainable fear of vacuum cleaners.

Salem - Sabrina the Teenage Witch
Salem Saberhagen was the ambitious feline friend and pet of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Previously a warlock, Salem was ordered to spend 100 years as a cat as punishment for trying to take over the world. He often gave bad advice, and spent much of his time singing and reading Sabrina's diary, but was also always loyal and caring to the Spellman family.

Schmeichel - Coronation Street
The long-legged loyal friend of Chesney Brown, Schmeichel is arguably the most popular and loveable pet in the whole of Corrie's 51-year history. Chesney and Schmeichel shared a special bond; growing up together, sharing fish and chips, running away together - and he even joined in with Chesney's first kiss with girlfriend Katy. But arguably the greatest moment for the loveable mutt was when he interrupted a tender moment between Les and Cilla as they shared a romantic night in their jacuzzi bath. Sadly the delightful duo were torn apart from one another in 2011 when the Great Dane was diagnosed with liver cancer. Heartbreaking!

The Chick and the Duck - Friends
Having a whole episode dedicated to them in series three, these little critters remained firm favourites for Friends addicts throughout the show's ten-season run. Initially a gift from Joey to Chandler, the feathered friends were a source of entertainment and affection for the six friends. The animals finally died of old age but to save Joey's feelings, the rest of the group lied to him in the final episode by saying that they had gone to a special farm where they would live happily but could never be visited. On hearing this, Joey bought Chandler a new chick and duckling as a housewarming gift and named them Chick Jr and Duck Jr. So if there ever is a reunion...

Pudsey - Ashleigh and Pudsey from Britain's Got Talent
One of TV's most talented dogs, Pudsey was the worthy winner of Britain's Got Talent 2012. Owner and trainer Ashleigh Butler had cared for him since she was 11 and the pair's special bond showed in their jaw-dropping tricks and flicks. The border collie, bichon frise and Chinese crested cross scooped a £500,000 prize - that's a lot of dog biscuits! - and is now ready to take Hollywood by storm thanks to celeb pals Gary Barlow, Nelly Furtado, Jedward, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian.
