'Game of Thrones', 'NCIS', 'How I Met Your Mother': Tube Talk Q&A

By and Daniel Sperling
Happy New Year, Tube Talk readers. Right, now the pleasantries are over let's get down to business. We know you're not here for our company - you want some telly info and you bloomin' well want it now!

Don't worry, we won't keep you hanging any longer...feast your eyes on the rest of this page for some Game of Thrones, How I Met Your Mother and Futurama goodness.

Loved Charlie Brooker's 2012 Wipe as usual. When does his new Wipe series start?

You don't have long 'til the misanthropic one's new Weekly Wipe series arrives on BBC Two. Brooker's brand new topical studio show kicks off on Thursday, January 31 - so just three weeks to wait.

The man himself has described Weekly Wipe - which, like his annual special, will feature sozzled US comedian Doug Stanhope, plus 'expert commentators' Barry Shitpeas and Philomena Cunk - as "a sort of Omniwipe, encompassing Newswipe, Screenwipe, Gameswipe and 'Stuffwipe', for want of a better phrase" - so something for everyone then!

Does Sky have any plans to repeat season two of Game of Thrones before season three begins?

Sky does! If you've been living in a cave - or have taken on a life of solitude as a member of the Night's Watch - then you might have missed the frankly fantastic news that UK viewers will get to see new episodes of Game of Thrones on Sky Atlantic just one day after US transmission, in line with season two's transmission pattern.

But for those of you who missed the epic fantasy drama's second run first time round, all ten episodes will be repeated on Sky Atlantic from Monday, January 21 - leading directly into the season three premiere on April 1 - no fooling!

Any idea when How I Met Your Mother season eight will air on E4?

Yeah. Sorta. Kinda. OK, well, you may have noticed that the new season of Mother, or HIMYM if you're one of those cool kids with no time for words, is part of E4's new for the New Year lineup, which also includes Revenge, The New Normal, My Mad, Fat Diary and others.

Unfortunately, we can't really improve on E4's assurance that Ted, Barney, Robin, Marshall, Lily and Bob Saget will definitely be back in January. When we asked the broadcaster for a more specific airdate, they gave us the rather vague response of the "end of the month". But hey, new How I Met Your Mother in only 21 days or fewer - that ain't too bad, right?

When does season nine of NCIS air on Channel 5?

Aah, who doesn't love a nice police procedural on a cold winter's eve? It feels like the NCIS team are on every channel going at the moment, but it's been ages since we've seen something new.

Thankfully, season nine will be coming to Channel 5 very soon - late January/early February soon! Yes folks, we're mere weeks away from the resolution to that extraordinary season eight cliffhanger, which hinted that an NCIS agent could be on the end of an assassin's bullet. Gulp.

Oh, and in case you missed it, spinoff show NCIS: LA starring Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J is already back on Sky1. The season four premiere aired last Sunday at 10pm, and will be returning same time, same place this week (January 13). Get on demand-ing and series linking now!

Do you have any more info on Kevin Bacon's new show The Following? The trailers are intense!
The Following

The Following - which stars Bacon as Ryan Hardy, a tortured FBI agent hunting down a deranged killer (James Purefoy) - is definitely a fun rollercoaster ride, but anyone with a weak stomach, who can't stand the sight of blood or has a thing about eye gouging might want to give this one a miss - for a network series, it's surprisingly brutal stuff.

Oh and try your best to forget Charlie Brooker's spot-on cop spoof A Touch of Cloth while watching too, or you may find Hardy's battle with the bottle and his own demons a little difficult to take seriously. The Following isn't groundbreaking but it is a good deal of fun - just switch your brain off and enjoy. It debuts on Sky Atlantic on Tuesday, January 22 at 10pm.

Any news on the return of new Futurama to Sky 1? Last time this came up you said the end of 2012 and there is no Planet Express ship in sight.
Futurama.

Ah, we're crazy sorry, fellow Futurama geek. Rest assured, some sort of appropriate punishment will be lined up for us by the DS chiefs...maiming by snu-snu, perhaps?

Anyway, it's true, we were told last year that season 6.5 of Futurama would air on Sky1 in December, but obviously that never happened. When we approached Sky and asked "What the hell?", we learnt that in fact there's currently no return date confirmed.

Also, the show isn't listed on the advance schedule Sky provided us with that stretches until the end of February, so chances are it won't be back until after then. Not exactly 'good news', we know, but it definitely has not been abandoned by Sky, so keep scanning the horizon for that ship...

When is Smash back in the UK?

Not for a while yet, we're afraid. NBC's musical drama - which has undergone something of a creative overhaul for season two - returns to US screens on February 5, but - unlike with Game of Thrones and The Following - UK viewers have a little longer to wait...

The current ETA for Smash 2.0 is July - it's a pity we have to wait, but hopefully - as with that other US acquisition Glee - the delay will mean that Sky Atlantic won't find itself at the mercy of erratic US scheduling and can air all 18 new episodes with no breaks.
