February's TV Box Sets: 'Girls', 'Gossip Girl', 'Justified'

By and Daniel Sperling
February means only one thing - Valentine's Day. And no matter whether you're spending February 14 cuddled up with a loved one or in your PJs surrounded by cats and empty ice cream tubs, there's nothing like a TV box set to make your evening a success.

Read on for more details on our five favourite box sets this month...

Girls - Season 1 (February 4)
Starring: Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet
Rated: 18
Format: DVD, Blu-ray
Enjoying the second season of Lena Dunham's popular (if divisive) comedy Girls? Then you'll probably want to pick up the first season on DVD, or Blu-ray - if you want to relive all that terrible sex in crystal-clear quality.

We're rather fond of Girls here at Tube Talk - despite what the cynics might think (and what the title might suggest), it's not just for female telly-watchers. It's just plain funny - enjoy it at your leisure at home if you missed it first time round.

Borgen - Series 2 (February 4)
Starring: Sidse Babett Knudsen, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, Pilou Asbæk, Søren Malling
Rated: 15
Format: DVD, Blu-ray
BBC Four's latest hit Scandinavian import is Borgen - a political drama that (whisper it) is actually better than the channel's Danish crime cracker The Killing - you'll soon forget all about the subtitles as you're drawn into the world of Denmark's strong but flawed Prime Minister Birgitte Nyborg (Knudsen).

Series two is out on both DVD and Blu-ray this month and if you're a latecomer to Borgen then a two-series box set is also available in both formats. It's worth the RRP just for Pilou Asbæk's performance as damaged, womanising media adviser Kasper Juul.

Gossip Girl - Season 6 (February 18)
Starring: Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford
Rated: 12
Format: DVD
If you've somehow managed to avoid finding out the true identity of Gossip Girl (here's a hint - it makes absolutely no bloody sense) then you might be interested to here that the last ten episodes - including that revelatory final instalment - will be available to enjoy on DVD later this month.

And if you're a Gossip Girl novice - or feel a burning desire to pass on your love of the Upper East Siders to a friend - then there's also a Complete Series box set, containing all 121 episodes, out in late Feb too.

Justified - Season 3 (February 25)
Starring: Timothy Olyphant, Natalie Zea, Nick Searcy, Jacob Pitts
Rated: 15
Format: DVD, Blu-ray
Drug cartels. Hidden fortunes. Family showdowns - Timothy Olyphant's quick-firing Raylan Givens has to deal with all that and more in the third season of backwoods crime drama Justified, which arrives on DVD and Blu-ray in a few short weeks.

The Deputy US Marshall's brutal law enforcing techniques are put to the test again this season, as exiled mob enforcer Robert Quarles (Neal McDonough) arrives in Kentucky on a mission to become top dog. Stick on those discs, and let the bullets fly.

My Mad Fat Diary - Series 1 (February 25)
Starring: Sharon Rooney, Ciara Baxendale, Claire Rushbrook, Ian Hart
Rated: TBA
Format: DVD
One of E4's most impressive commissions in ages, My Mad Fat Diary tells the story of Rae, a 16-year-old who's overweight and in over her head when she's released from a psychiatric hospital and into the scary world of '90s teenagers.

Based on the real-life diaries of author Rae Earl, My Mad Fat Diary has a terrible, cringeworthy truth to it that'll entertain anyone who's ever written at length about wanting "to hump a boy until there's nothing left" (like us). And the amazing Britpop soundtrack is a nice little bonus.
