Tube Talk: The Edinburgh Diaries

Some might say that after a very long weekend living and breathing all things television at the industry's biggest annual festival, a break would be called for. Those people would be lesser journalists unqualified fools!

As I sit on the slightly delayed, slightly claustrophobic GNER train back from the Scottish capital, I cast my mind back over the events of the last few days (Do click here to peruse our very extensive coverage). Celebrity Big Brother axed, quite helpfully overshadowing the fact that Five has nothing in its autumn schedule. BBC One overcoming its Queen scandal to take the coveted Channel of the Year award. Sir Jimmy Savile feeling up Digital Spy's media correspondent.

But those are the major headlines. Here at Tube Talk we're more concerned with the minutae of programme scheduling, and I have news in buckets!

  • Criminal Minds has had its last outing on Five. The crime procedural will now air exclusively on Living.
  • New "time travel" drama Journeyman is actually quite good, despite my preconceptions. More on that next time.
  • Ugly Betty is returning to Channel 4 three months earlier than expected. The broadcaster is borrowing a trick from Sky One's book and airing the show soon after its US transmission, in two halves. The first eleven episodes of season two will play out from October.
  • FX has the for-life rights to its dark drama Dexter.
  • Fonejacker has been commissioned for a second series.
  • Road Wars has not been cancelled, contrary to reports in this week's Broadcast. The show has in fact taken a "creative break" part-way through its fifth season.
  • Dennis Haysbert's The Unit could be seen in Freeview homes for the first time. Bosses are "looking at" whether the Bravo drama could work on new channel Virgin 1, launching in October.
  • ER could have a new home from 2008. The long-running medical drama will "probably" move from E4 to More4 next season, according to More4 boss Peter Dale. The channel will also screen the recently-acquired Kelsey Grammer comedy Back To You.
  • Sky One's remake of The Prisoner was called off because of "creative differences". Click here for more.
Finally, here's a picture of me on a UKTV Gold spacehopper (you know, the ones from those idents):

Classic picture Neil! (Y) Good news about Ugly Betty coming on earlier, the US promos have been dead good. Shame they are not doing it for Desperate Housewives aswell. Great that Fonejacker has been commissioned for a second series too, is it a longer run?
