Tube Talk

I think I'm very sick

On today's menu: Spooks, Katy Brand and Kath & Kim

Well, we're finally here. It's the fifth and final day of Tube Talk's five-in-a-week extravaganza! Well done me! Can I get a chant of "he's a jolly good fellow"? How about a hurrah? No? Fine, I'll just get on with it then. Excuse the tears...

Finally back for a new series next week is Spooks, the BBC's upmarket version of 24, with an "exciting" new serial format.

This time round the ten episodes will see the team deal with a single threat - the tense and mistrustful relationship between Britain, the US and Iran, with all the diplomatic and security issues that it brings.

For the first time (two-parters aside), this means that plotlines will carry over from episode to episode, so expect cliffhangers galore. As the BBC sells it, series six is "an exhilarating, high octane journey with an abundance of dramatic twists and turns". Fancy!

There is no shortage of the promised twists and turns in episode one, which begins with Ros receiving intel about Iranian terrorist Mehan Asnik and his plans for a chemical attack in London. Zaf, undercover in Tehran, helps plant a bomb on board a train in order to kill Asnik and destroy the virus.

Unfortunately, another busy commuter train pulls alongside and the civilian casualty count increases. The lethal phial is released, and it soon emerges that MI5 was the victim of false intelligence, a deliberate act to get them to target Asnik and release the virus onto the innocent population.

That's alright though - the virus was released in Iran, not Britain, right? Wrong...

Asnik, having left the train before the explosion, comes to Adam to defect, unaware that he has already been infected with the virus. On the way back to base Asnik, Zaf and Adam are intercepted by a group of mercenaries - who may or may not be working for Asnik's former handler, the mysterious "Copenhagen" - with Zaf and Asnik being taken captive.

Before too long a highly contagious Asnik has infected Zaf and the kidnappers, who unsurprisingly become incentivised to negotiate their release for a virus. Asnik is later deposited onto the busy streets of London while a rapidly-deteriorating Zaf is left with the mercenaries.

What do you think to the new format? Let me know by adding your views at the end of the column. More Spooks gossip next week!

New show alert: Katy Brand's Big Ass Show, Fridays at 10pm on ITV2 from next week (19th). The comedy sketcher showcases Brand's "caricatures" - not impressions, apparently - of celebrities such as Kate Moss, Angelina Jolie and Kate Winslet alongside other skits not involving celebrities. Regardez:

She's no relation to Russell, by the way.

Now, look at moiye, look at moiye, look at moiye! For all those who have asked (and asked, and ASKED!) I am pleased to bring you news about the return of our favourite Antipodean comedy, Kath & Kim. Series four - guest-starring Matt Lucas and Shane Warne, to name but two - kicks off on Living at 10pm on November 1. Hurrah!

Phew. More next week!

I like the new format - especially as it gives a different pace to the way in which we perceive characters. It's not too 24 - and I like the way that the battle not to come unstuck and get killed/fired isn't resolved inside each hour.

I just watched the 1st episode (which was fantastic of course) but I also went to the bbc spooks website which was AMAZING - take a look - I recommend.

Are they intentionally trying to make it more like 24? I'm so not sure about a one-storyline series, especially when it sounds a bit 'seen this before'. I've been a fan of the show from the start, and I await with baited breath...
