Welcome to Joss Whedon's 'Dollhouse'

Published Wednesday, Mar 12 2008, 17:48 GMT | By Neil Wilkes | 27 comments
In 2005 it was Lost, then the next year it was Prison Break, swiftly followed by the international superhero "phenom" known as Heroes. As for this year, well, the jury's still out on that one - but whatever, this year is so last year. The hunt is already on to find the show everyone will be talking about come Christmas.

Over the next few weeks Tube Talk will be profiling some of the shows in with a shot of winning a place in your hearts. First up, from Buffy supremo Joss Whedon, we have Dollhouse.

What's it all about?
The series follows a group of men and women (the "dolls") who can be imprinted, Matrix-style, with different personality packages, including memories, skills, language and muscle memory, for various assignments. These assignments could be romantic, adventurous, uplifting, illegal and even sexual.

And the Dollhouse is...?
... the place where the dolls live. When not on assignment, the dolls are mind-wiped and sent to live in a futuristic dormitory-cum-laboratory billed the Dollhouse. The dolls have no memory of what they have been up to on their assignments, or much else besides.

Who's in it?
Only one member of cast has been confirmed so far - Eliza Dushku, perhaps better known as Faith from Whedon's Buffy and Angel, as well as the short-lived supernatural drama Tru Calling. Eliza (who also helped come up with the idea for the show) plays Echo, a doll who starts to develop a self-awareness of her situation.

How many dolls are there?
We'll meet at least three others to begin with. There's Sierra (Echo's "strikingly beautiful" best friend), Victor ("distractingly handsome" - can you spot a pattern here? - whose character assignments range from Errol Flynn to a young DeNiro) and November (a "comforting, radiant presence" who also happens to be beautiful). Other characters include Dollhouse manager Adele; Paul Smith, an FBI agent who has been chasing the myth of the Dollhouse for years; Topher, the computer nerd responsible for "imprinting" the Dolls; and Boyd Langton, Echo's handler.

James Marsters! James Marsters! James Marsters!
This is Joss Whedon, so the chance of former Buffy stars appearing at some point is quite high - even though he claims to be reluctant. "When it [starts], I think it's important to be a step forward, and not a reunion," he told E! Online recently. "I never rule anybody out, but my first instinct is to try out new people."

I'm sold! When is it on?
Dollhouse will forego the usual pilot-before-a-possible-series malarkey, as Fox has already picked up the show for seven episodes! Filming begins towards the end of next month for an early September premiere in the US.

Sounds like a smashing good time. Joss is always bringing great stuff to the little box. What a grand world to live in where we have creative genius like this.

sounds great be better if sarar michelle gellar guest stars as some sort of villain or something - it would be a nice change to see her in a negative role
Frank, Australia, on June 2nd, 2008
They have already filmed quite a bit of the pilot, which can be seen online (clips). It also stars Tahmoh Penniket (Helo from Battlestar Galactica). Looks good so far.

cant wait for this show, big fan of eliza's and joss's. would probably have preferred "Faith" the series. but dollhouse sounds different and new!!
Ricky, London, on May 26th, 2008
Hmmm... seems Joss & Eliza has been watching some Japanese Manga perhaps "Darker than black". You will see term doll is used for a similar being... or maybe from Bleach's Bountu Arc, where there use dolls for combat... Just cause it's Joss doesn't mean it's original.

Dollhouse sounds great. Will it premiere in Australia if you have Austar possibly on the Sci Fi or Fox Channel because I really would like to see it.

I hope Whedon gets the control and freedom he needs to make this work; his shows have always been intelligent and among the best TV ever has to offer. I am looking forward to the premiere of this show with much excitement and anticipation.

dollhouse sounds really good. that type of sci-fi story is right up my street. wish joss would be more open to James Marsters being in tho, i know that he & Eliza were in Buffy together but i dont think the fans care that they would be in this together as well. he's a very under rated actor.

Joss Whedon back on the Tube, Hooray!!!! This sounds fabulous!! I still watch firefly and serenity on a regular basis
Steve, Gosport, on March 28th, 2008
This sounds familiar....it is a grown version of Joe 90 but with Joss at the helm it should be great!
Sue Mitchell, Waltham, Lincolnshire, on March 20th, 2008
And while we're at it, please can we have 'Firefly' back? Best sci-fi show *ever!* --

Leoni, London , on March 13th, 2008
I'll watch ANYTHING Joss Whedon has been responsible for creating. He is a creative genius and is really responsible for making the 'creators' of shows (such as JJAbrams etc) more visible to the public.
Shawn, Ireland, on March 13th, 2008
I don't care, I will watch this one. I hope it blows up in the same mainstream way as Buffy, Lost and Heroes but I also hope it's geuinely good enough to be successful.
Penny, Bristol, on March 13th, 2008
Sounds like a bit of a rip off of Dark Angel...
