'Torchwood' Finale: The Aftermath

Published Sunday, Apr 6 2008, 20:06 BST | By Neil Wilkes | 11 comments
So, what did you make of it? In case you've tried to block it out of your memories, retcon-style, allow me to refresh you. In Torchwood's season finale, beloved systems analyst Tosh perished at the hands of Jack's demented brother Gray. (Owen died also, but that's old news now).

If you haven't read our interview with Naoko Mori yet, click here for her thoughts on Tosh's heroic exit and the possibility of Captain Jack getting his glove out next series. For all those asking about whether there will be a third series, don't sweat it: it's a dead cert; the only question is when it will be announced.

But back to Tosh. Why was she killed? Torchwood writer Chris Chibnall tells me that loved characters "have to die" because of the life-and-death situations the team deals with. "You always watch shows that do that, like Spooks and Lost, on the edge of your seats. It retains that element of surprise and it feels loyal to the concept of the show. We deal so much with death in Torchwood and it's a very present force. We knew very early on in [planning] series two that people were going to die."

Perhaps stating the obvious, but do the deaths of Tosh and Owen pave the way for new characters? "Again, whatever decisions they take about series three they will take without me," says Chibnall, who is leaving the show to produce a British version of Law & Order. "I could see it going either way, to be honest."

Meanwhile, James Marsters is keen to reprise the Captain John role next series. "I think there's a really good journey possible with Captain John," he says, adding: "As long as they keep the writers they have, I'm back, man!" Ooops. Guess we'd better keep Chris's departure a low-key affair, then.

This weekend there's also been the little issue of Doctor Who returning, complete with a Billie Piper-shaped bonus, but more on that soon.

What did you make of the Torchwood finale? Did the right people die? Click the link below to add your comments to this entry! If you have any questions for the column please use the link at the top of the page instead.

I thought that the episode was great, but they killed off the WRONG people. Ianto and Rhys can both go! They annoy me. I don't understand their purpose or continued existence. They have no personalities and the two with great ones are killed off. I'm not opposed to the killing off of characters, just not the main ones. The chemistry between the four has been phenomenal and each serves to help balance the other three. What can one say about James Marsters? I've had the HOTS for him for forever. I like his character again....bad with a good core. I'd like to see him on the show more often. Perhaps he can go back in time and bring Tosh and Owen back...he is a time traveler after all!

I agree with Charlie - I wish they'd killed off Rhys! I've been hoping he'd die ever since the show began, he annoys me so much!

I had just warmed to Tosh then in the very last episode of the series she was brutally killed off. I found Owen carrying on as usual although actually being dead ridiculous. Perhaps Tosh will be resurected in the next series. I wonder if Captain Jack's brother will resurect him self out of that draw.

I kinda hoped Gwen would die instead. And/Or Rhys. I wonder if Torchwood will carry on with the three of them, or will they get new members.....CAN I BE ONE!

It was brilliant. The scripts. The acting. Who died. Captain John. I just wish Rhys could have died.

This Finale was perfect, though some people are saying it lacked the action of series 1, do you not think that throughout the whole series writers took us more in depth to each character(specially with how we found out they all joined). Therefore the finale was fitting for the series. I really hope there is another 3 series. Freema ageyman must be a shoe in for the new medic. Well done to all the writers.

Tense, action packed, sad, moving, touching and suspenseful, all wrapped into one episode. Fantastic. Best episode of TW to date. 10/10. Roll on Series 3!

The finale was so well scripted and acted out. The last scenes with Tosh & Owen were done brilliantly. There are interesting questions raised with who will come in as medical officer and technical bod, also some more of Captain John perhaps?

I sobbed like a sobbing thing at the finale. The final scene between Tosh and Owen was so well written and acted. A fabulous finale.

the series conclusion was excellant, i liked both the characters that died, but believe it good that they did. It allows for growth within the show, and will keep it fresh. It does seem likely that Captain John is going to be around in season three, after all we learnt at the conclusion of series two that he wasnt as black as he originallly looked. Makes me wonder if James Marsters is going to do his Spike trick again, he effectively took over Buffy and Angel,God someone give this guy his own series!!!

Don't kill Gwen as it would spoil the show completely for me. I loved Tosh and Owen and it's a pity that they had to die and I have warmed to Rhys as well as Ianto?.
