Previewed: The Doctor's Roman Adventure

What are Donna and The Doctor staring at? Has the Tardis left them behind? Has Rose re-appeared, sprouted wings and taken flight?

No, those are all silly suggestions. They're actually staring at Mount Vesuvius as it prepares to erupt, of course!

The Fires Of Pompeii
This week Doctor and The Donna land in AD79 (only 52 years after Jack's burial, eh?) in Pompeii, the day before the big blowout. The Doctor is keen to scarper straight away - although needless to say, events conspire against him - while Donna is determined that the pair do something to save the clueless townsfolk. There are guest stars aplenty in this episode, including Peter Capaldi (last seen as Sid's dead dad in Skins), Phil Davis and Tracey Childs.

The Sisterhood
This is Doctor Who, so it's not just as simple as a volcano blowing its top. The supernatural-tinged mystery involves a group of ladies known as the Sisterhood - no relation to those feline creatures from previous series - who have the ability to tell future events. For example, they know who the Doctor and Donna are, and they seem to know a bit about what's in store for them both too. As a cunning means of identification, members of the Sisterhood draw eyes on the backs of their hands then hold them up in front of their faces as if to represent ACTUAL eyes (see right). Genius, no?

Rose Again
There's no sign of Rose in this episode - but then again, there was no sign of her in the original cut of episode one provided to us press people, either. My guess is we'll see several more Rose cameos over the course of the series in the buildup to her return proper (episodes 11 to 13) but probably not again for a few weeks.

Who said what?
Here are some select quotes from the episode, with the obligatory blanks left in to keep you guessing. Add your guesses at the end of the column!

"A temple made of ****."
"Breathe deeply, remember what the ********** said."
"Doctor, *** ** ***u****g."
"We are building the ******, as dictated by the gods."
"Come with me."

What did you make of Rose's return? How is Catherine Tate doing this series? Click the link below to add your comments to this entry! If you have any questions for the column please use the link at the top of the page instead.

'Could they not have used a little brain matter and changed it to maybe a mouth on a hand, at least?' What you mean like Deidara from Naruto? Face it, nothing is original. There are so many shows that every idea has been done before in some fashion. It's how you use them and combine them that makes plots 'original.' Please watch the episode before jumping to conclusions. P.S. I fail to see how the opening episode was unoriginal no matter how boring and tedious you found it. Walking fat? If you've watched a movie about that I'd sure like to see it.

The opening episode was tedious, boring and unoriginal. I hope it gets better. The only good part was the 20 seconds that Rose was on screen. The little adipose looked like they were created by someone for the sole purpose of the audience thinking: "I want one of those!" Cue production of a bunch of squeezy grey blobs and cha-chinging in the pockets of programme makers. And as for the eyes on the back of the hands--not only is it not original, but it is also trendy (Pan's Labrynith, Pirates). Could they not have used a little brain matter and changed it to maybe a mouth on a hand, at least?

I really enjoy Donna's character. It's nice not to have that unrequited love thing going on this series. I actually tired of it last series. I like the chemestry the Dr and Donna seem to have plus I love that Rose is coming back. I don't think the Dr should be able to move on so quickly, we all know he loved/loves her deeply. Also, I think Patrick from Ireland has it right

My guess is... "A temple made of gold."
"Breathe deeply, remember what the sisterhood said."
"Doctor, She is returning."
"We are building the future, as dictated by the gods."
"Come with me."

Asuming the 'She is returning' line is correct, I suspect it could be in reference to Rose, I'm probably nowhere near though. :0)

Is Rose's return linked to when she could see thru' space and time? Maybe she saw a future time that the Dr would need her, that she's found a way with the parallel world version of Torchwood to return between the worlds? Hmmm..

These are so open-ended! My attempts: "A temple made of lava." "Breathe deeply remember what the soothsayer said." "Doctor, it's so troubling." "We are building the future, as dictated by the gods."

Catherine looks more attractive with her hair like that.

I think that Jack will make a cameo perhaps donna will bump into a different companion each week and not no it after all Jack mentioned pompeii in series one.

My guesses... "A temple made of fire." "Breathe deeply, remember what the priestess said." "Doctor, try to ***u****g." (not a clue about the last word) "We are building the future, as dictated by the gods." (next time trailer "Come with me."
