A look round the new Big Brother house

Published Wednesday, Jun 4 2008, 00:02 BST | By Neil Wilkes | 21 comments
One day to go. The bane of my existence biggest TV show of the summer begins tomorrow!

Yesterday I was among the lucky few to tour the new Big Brother house, and boy did I make myself at home. I sat on their chairs, I lay on their beds, I... actually, I'll spare you details of what I did in the toilet. (It's not too late to install extractor fans, is all I'm saying).

Anyway, here's what I managed to glean about BB9. Scoop fans, you're in for a treat.

The Show
There will be sixteen housemates on launch night - the most ever to enter the house in one go. Predictably, producers are keeping quiet over the identities of the contestants, but did tease that there would be a "good balance among the sexes... and the sexualities". There is an over-50 in the lineup, and possibly someone who is 18, but no two housemates will be related to each other.

After Big Brother 9, Channel 4 has agreed to a further TWO series of the show. There is no official word on the return of Celebrity Big Brother in January 2009, but E4 replacement Celebrity Hijack was described as a "one-off experiment" that probably won't be repeated.

The Diary Room
Housemates will have to leave through the main entrance door, then wait in a small corridor before being allowed into the diary room. This extra space between the main house and the diary room has been created to ensure greater privacy when the housemates are speaking to Big Brother.

The entrance/exit stairs, which split into two and flank the diary room, will ordinarily be barricaded off by "child gates".

The diary room is slightly bigger than usual, with a plush red interior and a huge custom-built blue chair (modelled above right by yours truly).

The Living Room
Huge multi-seat sofas have been ditched in favour of numerous single and double-occupancy seats. A mystery blue hatch can be found in the living room, as well as the house's only plasma screen. The green and red mood lighting of Big Brother 8 will not be back.

For the first time ever the housemates will be able to accurately tell the time from a "discreetly-located" wallclock.

The Bedrooms
This year there are two bedrooms - and they couldn't be more different from each other. One, with a locker theme, is very small, has eight harsh single beds and is veeeeery cold. The other is decorated with a "regal" theme (lots of reds and golds) and features eight double beds - each adorned with many pillows and soft sheets - as well as an expansive enclave to store clothes and shoes. Housemates will get to choose which bedroom they sleep in after they enter on launch night.

The Bathroom
The bathroom is distinctly Roman in feel, with gold figurine statues, gold chrome taps and a bath capable of housing more than one guest. The bathroom is completely visible from the main living area - with only a tiny area of the shower screen protected by a tint. Thankfully the toilets remain a completely private affair.

The Jail
Producers promise that all rule breaks will be dealt with "consistently and harshly" this year. To that end, a tiny jail has been installed in the garden - and any misbehaving housemates will be duly quarantined there as a punishment.

The Hidden Extras
Secret rooms will NOT be a theme this year, although a mystery task room - accessed via an orange door in the garden - is expected to be redecorated to fulfil a number of functions.

Prepare to surrender your summer. Big Brother begins Thursday at 9pm on Channel 4 with a bum-numbing 100-minute launch show!

Neil, Has anyone ever told you that you look like the guy from supernatural! Look at the tube talk recommends image in comparison to you in the BB Chair!
Andy, Northumberland, on June 5th, 2008
Stay clear of the poo jokes, Neil. You're not funny! I'm in the USA for a month, so I'll catch the start and the end. Could be interesting. I just hope we don't have so many new housemates added to the group. Whatever happened to the original concept of a group of housemates surviving to the end - IF they can?
Dawn, Fulham, on June 5th, 2008
Arrgggghhh! Why did you have to ruin it? We are not supposed to see the Diary Room chair until Davina introduces it on launch night. You and your spoilers!!!!! (You know you love me! XOXO... Gossip Boy)

Samantha, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, on June 5th, 2008
omg I am so excited, less than 24 hours to go !!!! I have literally been counting down the days. I think the jail idea is fantastic, but no sneaking under the duvets this time to disguise themselves from eating chocolate when the house was divided before. Roll on 9pm ((*+*))
Ciara Mc Laughlin, Armagh, on June 4th, 2008
i cant wait, it better be good this year (",)
Ayesha, London, on June 4th, 2008
Big Brother seems like it might be a bit boring since everything has a lot of money spent on it and it seems quite posh looking hopefully its all nice people on the show. I want celebrity Big brother on again because I prefer that to Big Brother. But hopefully this year wil be great :)
Princess Consuela, Banana Hammock, on June 4th, 2008
How dare they steal my interior design ideas. That is exactly the same as my bedroom! They have also copied my bathroom! And yes, the chair is silver in that photo. And a haircut wouldn't go amiss.
Kendall, Sheffield, on June 4th, 2008
let the bitching begin! cant wait to see the princess' argue over the bedrooms. how is it, i hate this program and yet watch every bit of it and let it completely consume my conversations. i guess its a love hate thing.
Vicki, Ireland, on June 4th, 2008
Hiya i looked on recent pics of Diaryroom chair an it looks "gold" but you say its "blue" dont quite know where that comes from!! the house in general looks really great. But besides that i am looking forward to BB tomorrow iwont be able to sleep thinkin of it LOL xx
Gerri, Darwen, on June 4th, 2008
It may be just the way my mind works, but i bet anyone who decided to go for the locker theme bedroom will get a nicer ride than the ones who go for the appearence of luxary! I know I'd go for the single bed no matter how cold it is over sharing a double with a freak every time!! Damn... I bet I get drawn in this year despite my best efforts!
Bev, Bangor, on June 4th, 2008
i can't wait!
Sean, London, on June 4th, 2008

Alan, Cork, on June 4th, 2008
Awww, don't you look so pretty on the diary room chair! You need a haircut though. ANYWAY, Big Brother is back tomorrow and I can't wait!! Hope they have no freaks in it this year, but I suppose thats probably like saying " I hope there's no welsh people in Wales ". Roll on BB! I can't wait!!!!!!
Alex, Newport, on June 4th, 2008
"and a huge custom-built blue chair" That chairs looks awfully silver to me in the photo of you modelling it!
