7m viewers tuned in to watch Britney's ""embarrassing" comeback attempt at the 2007 Video Music Awards on Sunday night, according to data provided by Nielsen Media Research.

The MTV show was the second-most watched cable telecast last week, being beaten only by TNT hit The Closer the previous Monday - which itself set a new ratings record for a series episode on basic cable.

Other notable appearances in the cable ranker this week include a High School Musical 2 rerun with a respectable 5m viewers and another TNT favourite, Saving Grace, which had 4.8m in its post-Closer slot.

On broadcast, the ranker is dominated by sport. NBC took the top 4 spots with NFL coverage on Thursday and Sunday, while Fox's post-game OT show placed a respectable sixth. CBS made four appearances in the top ten, with 60 Minutes notably achieving 10.8m viewers before NBC's NFL coverage on Sunday night.
