The Education of Max Bickford, a new drama series starring Academy Award winner Richard Dreyfuss ("The Goodbye Girl" ) in his television series debut, as a college professor whose life is at a crossroads, premieres Sunday, September 23 (8 - 9PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden (Pollock), Golden Globe and NAACP Image Award winner Regina Taylor (Ill Fly Away), Helen Shaver, Katee Sackhoff and Eric Ian Goldberg also star. Rod Holcomb, an executive producer of the series, directed the premiere, which was written by series executive producers and co-creators Dawn Prestwich and Nicole Yorkin.
In this premiere episode, Max is both shocked and angry when a prestigious faculty position that he had expected to receive is given instead to Professor Andrea Haskell (Harden), a former student and ex-lover who has just joined the Chadwick College faculty.
To make matters worse, his old friend Judith Hackett Bryant (Taylor), president of the all-women's Chadwick College, has endorsed this decision. Making things even more challenging for Max is the fact that his best friend, Steve, a professor of anthropology, has just returned to campus as Erica (Shaver) -- after a sex-change operation.
These days, Max's joy comes from spending time with his 11-year-old son, Lester (Goldberg) who is kind and mature-beyond-his-years. More challenging is his relationship with his feisty, somewhat aloof teenage daughter, Nell (Sackhoff), an aspiring musician who is less than thrilled to be a freshman at the college where her father teaches. Now, everything and everyone is up for reexamination in Max's life.
The Education of Max Bickford is produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television, in association with Regency Television and CBS Productions. Nicole Yorkin, Dawn Prestwich and Rod Holcomb are the executive producers.
