The Emancipation Of Ernesto will see Valderrama cast as an innocent and confused son seeking his father and a former girlfriend amid the excess and confusion of Los Angeles.
Susan Levison, Fox's senior vice president of comedy development, said: "The writing jumped off the page, it has a really unique original tone. It was a mix of real emotion with hard comedy. [Writer Emily Kapnek] has crafted a character we have never seen before."
Valderrama has appeared in movies including Fast Food Nation since That 70s Show ended in 2006.
