FOX is keeping quiet about the plotline for the third season of 24.

The second ended recently with a cliffhanger which saw the freshly reinstated President Palmer endure an assasination attempt.

It is unknown whether the third season 'day' will follow on directly from the second (although it's unlikely -- none of the main characters have slept in well over 24 hours already). If not, then the third could begin in the not-too-distant future with either a recovering President Palmer or a dead one.

The actor who plays Palmer, Dennis Haysbert, has not yet been signed up for another run of the show -- currently the only returning actor is Kiefer Sutherland, aka Jack Bauer.

FOX's entertainment president Gail Berman told reporters last week: "I can confirm for you that an attempt at assassination has been made on the president, and we don't know what will happen."
