CBS has ordered a pilot script for a modern-day remake of '70s cop show The Streets Of San Francisco.
Writers Sheldon Turner and Robert Port will pen the inaugural episode, with Tomb Raider director Simon West in line to helm the pilot.
The original series saw veteran police officer Mike Stone (Karl Malden) team with younger cop Steve Keller (Michael Douglas) to fight crime in the City by the Bay. The new version will aim to bring the spirit of the original to a contemporary setting.
Turner told The Hollywood Reporter: "The times are very similar - it was the Vietnam War in the 1970s and the Iraq War now. There is the same sort of tension between generations, and we wanted to carry that to the new series."
Turner added that the two lead characters Keller and Stone bore similarities to US presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain.
"One, like Obama, wants to be active and believes in rehabilitation, while the other one, like McCain, doesn't quite believe in rehabilitation and believes that the enemy is the enemy," he explained.
Turner and West will serve as executive producers on the show.
