Fishburne lined up for 'CSI' lead

Laurence Fishburne is in negotiations to take over from William Petersen on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Matrix actor, along with John Malkovich and Kurt Russell, had been the producers' top choices to succeed the long-serving Petersen, who will depart the CBS police procedural drama midway through next season.

Though the network has remained tight-lipped on the new character, it is thought that Fishburne's role will be that of a scientist with an identical genetic profile to a serial killer who has yet to act on any murderous impulses.

The ninth season of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation premieres on October 9 on CBS.
