Time Warner Cable phases out NVOD

Near video-on-demand (NVOD) services are being phased out by Time Warner Cable on its digital cable services in favour of directing consumers to the full video-on-demand (VOD) offering.

The two services had been operating concurrently for some time; the first being the usual pay-per-view operation with movies starting on multiple channels at various start times, and the latter being 'iControl' video-on-demand. VOD permits a cable subscriber to buy a movie, usually for a 24 hour period, and use the play/pause/fast-forward/rewind controls on their digital cable remote to start, stop and control the movie as they wish.

Most NVOD channels now display a message inviting viewers to tune to the VOD menu channel for the full selection of movies.

The move will permit the NVOD bandwidth to be used for other services.
