ABC has green-lighted a mini-series telling the tale of Octavius Caesar - the boy who went on to become the emperor Augustus.
The eight-part mini-series Empire will premiere on the network in the fall of 2004. The story begins in Rome in 44 B.C., just after the assassination of Julius Caesar.
ABC entertainment president Susan Lyne said:
"It’s been a long time since a project of this scope aired on network television. Tom [Wheeler] has created characters in this piece with very contemporary desires and failings, and placed them in an era that calls for heroes. It’s a big, satisfying story that will make eight incredible hours of television."
