Deborah Norville has been hired by MSNBC to anchor an interview-driven programme as part of the network's week-night lineup.

Analysts consider the placement of Deborah Norville Tonight in the 9pm hour as an attempt by third-placed MSNBC to directly challenge Larry King Live over on the higher-rated CNN.

Norville currently anchors the syndicated show, Inside Edition. She said:

"I'm thrilled about this tremendous opportunity. After many years as a broadcast journalist, I'm really excited to be part of the MSNBC primetime line-up at a time when so many critical issues are making headlines. We live in an era in which everyone now recognizes how critical information is to all of our lives. The chance to speak daily with the decision makers whose actions impact viewers' lives -- as well as the newsmakers whose actions enlighten and entertain us -- is one I welcome. And, I'm delighted to be a part of a gifted group that includes so many friends and former colleagues."

The programme will air from NBC's headquarters at the Rockefeller Center in New York and from MSNBC's headquarters in New Jersey.
